Last week, we started researching about zombies and what we could do when there's a zombie apocalypse. We picked 10 important ways we could prevent zombies from biting us. I made a drawing of a zombie and put down the 10 important ways. I just finished it because I went to the clinic on Thursday last week. It was a very fun experience, I learnt a lot of ways as well, how it would be helpful when you're in that situation or even without a zombie apocalypse, it's still useful.
The picture you see right there was my inspiration to draw my zombie, I changed a lot of stuff on its face. I removed half of its head to draw a brain, I also drew scars and flies flying around the zombie.
I am a student at in Uru Mānuka. In 2020 I was a year 9 and in 2021 I will be a year 10. This is a place where I will be able to share my learning with you. Please note....some work won't be edited - just my first drafts, so there may be some surface errors. I would love your feedback, comments, thoughts and ideas.

Students should choose their own seat - Persuasive Writing
Students should choose their own seat
I know the majority of teachers would disagree with students picking their own seats but in my opinion, I think that they should choose their own seats. This is beneficial for the students to help them improve their socialising skills, their ability to make new friends and be able to encourage each other.
Scientists have shown that if students were to sit with their friends, they would have an enjoyable time/day. And to add to that,
Firstly, I want to talk about improving students’ social skills, if you choose to sit with your friends, there wouldn’t be awkward situations. Being with your friends is comfortable, who would want to be with people they’re not comfortable and not close with?
I understand the concern some teachers have but if you would trust your students, you will have a better relationship with them. If you have seating arrangements and you let a group of students who are friends sit with each other, the other students who were put into seating arrangements would think that you are biased. Furthermore, students should be treated fairly whether or not it is based on their attitude, knowledge and learning. I think that students would appreciate it if the teachers are not biased. If you want your students to behave properly then do it in a proper way of educating them.
The first day of school, it’s overwhelming, I know, I’ve been there and it’s not really a good feeling. But when I saw familiar faces, I was relieved because I know people and I’ve worked with them before, I know the way they study. Since we know each other, we can interact with each other, we can even become closer and have lasting friendships’.
For starters, you are struggling with something, your friend can help you get back on track. If you have a problem or if you don’t understand something, you and your friend can figure it out together, moreover, that would strengthen your bond together.
You see, not everyone who sits with their social groups are that bad, they do sometimes talk a lot and if they do that is the time to separate them, don’t embarrass them in front of the class, instead, go to them and just quietly tell them off, who knows it might even teach them to be responsibility.
I am a student myself and when I sit with my friends it puts me in my comfort zone, they also bring out the best in me. Trust me, your school year would be way more fun if you’re with your friends. I even think that students work harder and are more focused when teachers are not disrupting them or butting in.
In conclusion, it would help the students in a lot of ways, especially with their well-being. If we want to have a better hard-working, focused and fun environment, as teachers, you need to start the proper way of disciplining and educating.

My Own Mandatory Sign - Creative Manufacturing
Last week, we started making our own signs that would be good in the workshop, signs that haven't been made that was put in the workshop. We looked around the workshops to find ideas for the signs and drew them on a paper. The signs could either be a Mandatory Sign, Prohibitive Sign or a Hazard Sign.
I chose a Mandatory Sign for mine. Not only guys work in the workshops, but girls also work there as well, and since girls work in workshops, I decided to make a sign that says "You must tie your hair up". If girls caught their hair in the machines, of course, you know what's going to happen after that, your hair will be pulled or sucked into the machines. We had to make the signs digitally to post on our blog.
This is the sign that I made digitally. I used Google Drawing, I used shapes to make the blue circle and the blue rectangle, Mandatory Signs are blue (I talked about it on my previous post called "Signs and Hazards") I used word art for the words, I found the photo of the girl online, the colour before was black but I changed the format to make it colour white.
I'm really excited because we're going to be making them (the signs) next lesson.
It's been fun doing blogposts and creating our own signs because we used our imaginations and knowledge with signs.

Mindfulness Wellbeing - Term 1
What is "Mindfulness?" and how is it helpful?
My thoughts:
I think that mindfulness is helpful because it gets rid of the stress I'm feeling or just to calm me down for a short amount of time. It's also a very good way to start your day, it can stop your brain from overthinking, you don't need equipment to do it, even when you're just lying down staring at the ceiling, that's mindfulness because it helps your body to relax, it also means that you're safe from anything that could potentially harm you.
What is a Red and Green Brain?
Earlier, our teacher talked about two parts of the brain, the green and red brain. The green brain is when your body and mind are calm and you're safe.
The red brain is when you're in flight or fight, flight is when you're going to run away from the problem to keep you away from a dangerous situation or to keep yourself safe.
Fight mode is you're going to fight back and face the situation.
What am I feeling right now?
At the moment, I'm feeling okay, earlier I was kinda sleepy because I was listening to sad songs, I know sad songs suppose to make you sad but it made me sleepy. I think it's because the classroom was really quiet and everyone was focused on their tasks, doing what they're supposed to do, putting their mind to it.
(Additional Information)
Ways to relax:
Mindfulness is where you can choose which activity you want to do to keep yourself calm, relaxed and think about how you're feeling at the moment, thinking about the goals you want to achieve.
It helps our mental and emotional health knows as "Taha Hinengaro" stable, it helps as to relieve stress, relax our breathing and it keeps our brain healthy. My thoughts:

Solubility Experiment - Hurumanu - Science
Aim: We are going to find out whether salt dissolves faster or baking soda (solute) in water (solvent).
Hypothesis:
I think that salt dissolves faster than baking soda since the source of salt comes from ocean water and ocean water has around a quarter of saltwater in it.
Equipment:
Hypothesis:
I think that salt dissolves faster than baking soda since the source of salt comes from ocean water and ocean water has around a quarter of saltwater in it.
Equipment:
- A 250mL beaker
- 100mL measuring cylinder
- salt
- baking soda
- a stirring rod
- a teaspoon
- ruler (that we'll be using later on since we don't need it at the moment)
Method/Steps
- Fill the 250mL beaker with 100mL water.
- Add a teaspoon of baking soda, to derive the right amount of baking soda, run your ruler across the edges of your teaspoon.
- Stir the solute into the solvent until it is dissolved.
- Repeat step 2 and 3 until the solute which is the baking soda is dissolved.
- Record the amount of baking soda that was added.
- Repeat the steps with the table salt.
Results:
Solute | Number of teaspoons that dissolved in 100mL of water |
Baking Soda | 15 |
Salt | 22 |
Discussion:
This experiment is about dissolving two types of solutes in water which was our solvent. It's also about investigating which one dissolves faster, baking soda or salt.
Conclusion:
My hypothesis was that table salt would dissolve much faster than the baking soda.
This was an easy and chill experiment, I wouldn't say it's fun but it was calm and chill. We didn't do much of an experiment not like ones that you have to mix chemicals, ones that cause explosion and etc.
Our experiment worked well, my hypothesis was right. It was a successful experiment, we were able to learn something new.
My Year 9 Goal Settings
We've been doing our goal setting for almost two weeks, to show to our parents (when it's time for teacher and parents meeting) our goals and what we would like to work/improve on. What our learning strengths are, our next steps and what we're currently working on.
I want to work on my confidence since I'm not really confident with my work nor speaking in front of an audience, it makes me stressed out and my mind goes blank but I am trying to be better at it, it will need time and effort and patience, well sometimes, I also get stage fright.
I want to manage my emotions and feelings, I don't want them to get ahead of me and distract me from my learning.
I want to identify problems and think of the possible solutions, It's hard for me to sometimes identify problems because I think a lot of what the outcome would be
I want to think outside the square, I don't really think differently, I stay on the safer side, if I were to do something that I think I won't be able to finish or work on, I stick to my original plan. I want to be able to step out of my comfort zone and take the challenges.
I admit I'm not a person who helps others when they're having a difficult time, If you're like me it's fine but maybe try to help, if they don't have someone who can lean on, be that person, be the one who they can run to when they have a problem, I want to be someone who is able to help people.
Because helping people is a good deed, helping someone makes you feel good about yourself because you know that they're going to be a better person because of you.

Business Studies - Mark Zuckerberg
We started to do some digging about entrepreneurs, why they are an entrepreneur/why & how they became successful, what business they did, what risks and challenges they went through.
On Tuesday, we had to do research, put things together in one place/presentation, of a certain entrepreneur. I chose Mark Zuckerberg since he was the first person he came into my mind.
I put mine on a doc first and then afterwards, I put it on a slideshow for the final presentation. I included Mark's life before he was famous and successful

Signs and Hazard - Creative Manufacturing
What is a hazard?
Hazard means danger, harm or at risk, it causes harm to people, could be one, two or more. It can be both caused by humans or the environment.
You can find hazards in the workshops with the machines and materials or objects in the workshop.
It's not also the materials that could potentially harm you, it could also be a messy workspace, machinery left unguarded while in use, not having proper clothing, not having a guardian especially for students and etc.
Mandatory signs (colour blue signs) - If you want to prevent being in danger or in a harmful situation, you must follow what these mandatory signs are saying rules. You will see these signs on the road or construction sites or workshops.
2. What is a Prohibitive Sign?
Prohibitive signs known as a no sign or no symbol is a red circle sign with a red diagonal line across it sign where you are not allowed to do such things or activities. You will find these signs in public places such as malls, restaurants schools and etc.
3. What is a Hazard Sign?
Hazard signs are yellow-coloured signs that warn people about the harm of one or something can do, such as locations, poisons, or objects and etc. You will find these signs near active volcanoes or buildings.
You should also look out for danger signs, emergency information signs, fire signs, and warning signs.

My Summer Holiday
Since it was our first day of ESOL, we were introduced to what ESOL in year 9 works, and we had to make a blog post about our summer holiday.
I went to my friend's house, watched probably one of the best tv shows I'ver ever watched called "Riverdale", it's a teen drama, with a mixture of romance, mystery and thriller.
I did house chores as well, I did a lot of gaming, I mostly played this popular game in my country the Philippines called "Mobile Legends Bang Bang".
Since we're already talking about gaming, might as well tell you guys the rest of the games played during the holidays. I like fighting games, I'm not really into girly-girly games.
This game is called "Call of Duty" it's a game where you shoot the enemies, you have 5 people in your team, including you of course and 5 opponents.
This is also like the same as Call of Duty, it's called "Playerunknown Battlegrounds", "PUBG" for short, it's where you gather stuff from houses, it's like Fortnite. And shoot people.
I also went out with my family. My friends and I have a group chat so we have group calls there to see how everyone was doing. I went to a friend's cousin's house because it was her cousins birthday.
I also did a lot of cooking, I practised my cooking skills and I think that I'm improving a lot, my mum even thinks that my food is good. Not to brag but I think that I'm a pretty good cook. One of the dishes I made was "Aglio Olio", it's sooooooooo good!! You don't really need many ingredients, the recipe and the steps are really easy.
