Social Studies: Reflection - Why Do We Still Talk About The Treaty Of Waitangi?

The Treaty of Waitangi is established to respect one another regardless of their culture. These values are used in New Zealand because it allows a wider perspective, build a foundation of trust, understanding and awareness across cultures and beliefs. As a result, the Treaty of Waitangi creates diversity which makes New Zealand a more welcoming and safe place to live in. Lastly, the Treaty of Waitangi enables new knowledge, open ideas, different experiences and new skills.

Social Studies: The Native American Indian Tribes and the US Government (the Treaty of Hopewell)

In Social Studies, we had to do research about treaties. We had two options to pick from and I chose the Native American Indian Tribes and the US Government, which was the Treaty of Hopewell. We had to research the treaty we have chosen and present the information creatively using text, symbols and visuals.

There were questions that we had to answer:

  • Who was the treaty between?
  • How long has the treaty been binding?
  • What are the positives and negatives of being bound by the treaty?
  • Were there any obvious similarities between the people affected by the treaty you have researched and the people affected by the Treaty of Waitangi?
How this relates to our topic about the Treaty of Waitangi?
The reason why the Treaty of Hopewell relates to the topic of the Treaty of Waitangi is that both treaties are represented to form peace between two groups of people.  In addition, their treaties are formed to create alliances and to access shared resources.

What is a 'Treaty?'
  • A treaty is an international agreement concluded between States in written form and governed by international law.
  • A treaty is a legally binding international instrument agreed and signed by two or more sovereign nations.
(The US Government signed 370 treaties along with the Indigenous nations from 1778 to 1871).

5 Facts:

  • Lorde chose her stage name because she was fascinated with “royals and aristocracy”. However, she felt the name Lord was too masculine, thus she added an “e” to make it more feminine.
  • On 13 May 2015, a wax figure of Lorde was introduced to Madame Tussauds Hollywood.
  • In June 2014, Lorde released a two-piece make-up limited edition collection in collaboration with MAC Cosmetics, consisting of a lipstick titled after her debut album, Pure Heroine, and an eyeliner.
  • She has Croatian citizenship thanks to her mum Sonja Yelich's family, who immigrated to New Zealand from Dalmatia.
  • Before writing songs, Lorde wrote fiction. She wrote her first story aged 11 when her dog fell off her balcony and accidentally hanged itself.

English: The Yellow Brick Road pt2 (lockdown)

Story Link:

https://englishwithhume.weebly.com/uploads/1/0/7/2/10723048/yellow_brick_road_by_witi_ihimaera.pdf

Why does the narrator (speaker) believe they are moving to Wellington? In the narrator’s point of view, he believes the reason why they are moving to Wellington was that it will help them have a better life. As a piece of evidence, he said, “We'll make lots of money and be rich as anything because Wellington is where the money is. And you have to go where the money is, ay Dad. No use staying in Waituhi and being poor all the time, ay”. What Matiu (narrator) meant was Wellington was a place where there are a lot of opportunities, a better economy and a better lifestyle, which was good for his family.

English: The Yellow Brick Road pt1 (lockdown)

In English, we have to do a work about an interesting topic called "The Yellow Brick Road". The reason why it is intriguing is that I only know a certain brick road, which was shown in the film Wizard of Oz.

We had to read a short story titled of Yello Brick Road and answer questions in regards.

Well-being Assessment Reflection - Wananga

 During our Wananga, everyone in the class had to do an assessment about our well-being. We had to choose 3 personal well-being that we can work on. Personally, it was a bit hard to record the well-being I chose because I chose the physical well-being, school work well-being, and my social well-being. I finished it early and I guess you could say I did improve on those areas and I'm proud of it.

International Women's Day

"Show Not Tell" - English

 In our English class, we moved on to our next topic which was Creative Writing: The Narrative.

One of the task there was "Show Not Tell". An activity where you re-write the sentences in your own words without telling it but showing it. To show and not tell, adjectives must be included.

"The buildings were tall.

Sarah was really upset.

She was so happy to see him.

The lake was beautiful."

Parihaka - Social Studies

 After learning about the slave trade triangle, we simultaneously moved on to our next topic which is "Parihaka", a treaty in New Zealand, and it's extensional work which is the "Salt March" occurred in India with Martin Luther King Jr's participation.

What is the Parihaka treaty about? Parihaka was established as a sanctuary, a safe and peaceful place to live for the Maoris. Parihaka was a symbol of peace because it provides resistance from confiscation of the Maori land.

Lyrics:

My friend, My friend, I hate to see you suffer,

Events conspire to bring us to our knees,

My friend, my friend, you've taken this the wrong way,

Rise up, defend yourself, never give in,

Look to the sky, the spirit of Te Whiti,

The endless tide is murmuring his name.

I know Te Whiti will never be defeated,

And even at the darkest hour,

His presence will remain.

I'll sing to you the song of Parihaka.

Te Whiti he used the language of the spirit,

Then stood accused, the madman and his dream,

He saw the train go roaring through the tunnel,

He heard the voice travel on the magic wire,

But he loved the silence of the river,

He watched the dog piss on the cannon's wheel.

I know Te Whiti will never be defeated,

And even at the darkest hour,

His presence will remain.

I'll sing to you the song of Parihaka.

One day you'll know the truth,

They can't pull out the roots,

Come and take me home,

To weep for my lost brother.

They gather still, the clouds of Taranaki,

His children's children wearing the white plume,

So take me for the sins of these sad islands,

The wave still breaks on the rock of Rouhotu.

And when you taste the salt that's on your pudding,

And when you taste the sugar in your soup,

Think of Te Whiti, he'll never be defeated,

Even at the darkest hour,

His presence will remain,

I'll sing for you the song of Parihaka,

Come to Parihaka,

Weep for my lost brother,

The spirit of nonviolence,

Has come to fill the silence, Come to Parihaka.

Questions

What is the main message of this song? This song is about encouraging people to stand up against the unfair treatment of the people; To use their voices to influence others and spread awareness.

What line explains their passive resistance method?  "I know Te Whiti will never be defeated, And even at the darkest hour, His presence will remain. I'll sing to you the song of Parihaka."

What does 'You can't pull out the roots' refer to? In my opinion, I think it means that you can take the man out of the hood, but you can't take the hood off the man. Which refers to you can't take away where a person came from and their culture and beliefs. As well as British people can't pull or can't take the Maori land from them.

Give evidence of their determination... "I know Te Whiti will never be defeated, And even at the darkest hour,His presence will remain.I'll sing to you the song of Parihaka."

How does this song show the significance of Parihaka? It shows significance by giving a message of what happened in the past and how they overcame it with their faith, hope, beliefs, working together and perseverance.

What makes an event significant? What makes one event significant is the impact they were able to make and its long-lasting change for the better such as enhancement, development and improvement.

How many people were affected? about 1,600 troops were affected as well as Te Whiti and Tohu were arrested.

How long were people affected? The people were affected for about a hundred and sixteen plus.

To what extent were people affected? People involved in Parihaka were evicted from their homes, some were arrested, women were also raped during the invasion.

Marketing and Selling - Business Studies

To be successful in marketing and selling your product; product that people would want to purchase. It won't be that easy to achieve, you will have to go through steps, one of the key things in business is about producing your products or service, making it recognizable to the buyers and efficient for them.

In our lesson in Business Studies, last week, we started learning about marketing and selling. We comprehended it deeply, our teacher showed us a couple of clips to show and make us witness how it works.

To show our learning, we had to make an advertisement about that topic and there were a few selections of products that we had to choose from. We can work individually or in pairs. I chose to be paired with Rieya because I know that we can work well together, brainstorming both of our ideas will make a good result at the end because we are able to merge our ideas and improve it into something presentable and good. The selections were rubber/elastic bands, jandals, skipping rope, tissue box, playing cards, hot water bottle, cup.  We chose the playing cards because the both of us enjoy playing cards, we know how to play with them and we've noticed that not a lot of students in our school knows how to play it and we're pretty sure that worldwide, the majority don't know how to play it as well. They may know the basics such as the label of the cards.

We used "Canva" and shared it with each other so we can edit it.

 I would appreciate it and like it if you commented on my blog :)

Algebraic Graphing - Maths - Hurumanu

We've been learning about algebra and geometry and its segments for 14 weeks. For the first few weeks of learning algebra, we were asked to use the website called "Euclidia", in Euclidia, you will have to figure out the angles in order to make a perfect shape.

We learnt about algebraic patterns, trying to solve and find out the answers for each patterned questions.
We also used "Mathletics", the topics of level 4 algebra were divided into sections and in each section, there were more different questions that I had to answer.

To show our learning and that we've understood the methods of the topic algebra. We have to make a presentation to show our teacher, class and blog, to show the world that we've actually understood it.

In my group, there were 3 members, Shiela, Rieya and I. We decided to make an "Algebraic Graph", We used the shape square for demonstration.

I apologise for the blurry image, we didn't have the resources to take the photo of our graph.

WordArt - Lockdown

Today in Wananga before period 3, we had to make a WordArt, about what we did during lockdown. The purpose of making this is a remembrance, when we grow up, we'll remember the things we did during lockdown because of Covid19.
The words we have to put needed to be at least 10 words, we can put down more.
I think mine turned well, I like everything about this photo. The words were clearer and it popped out because of the black background since the words are colourful.

Hello and Goodbye Writing

Today, during in our Wananga time, we were told to make a "Hello and Goodbye" writing but it has to be about what we did during the lockdown. It's saying goodbye to what happened during the lockdown in the past and what is happening at the moment.
This is mine, I wrote it down on a Google Doc first and then transferring it to Google Draw.

Welcome to PE at Level 2 - Hurumanu - PE

Some things I liked during lockdown was that I had a lot of time to work on myself and learn more about myself. I've learnt how to make a lot of dishes, I spent more time with my family at home, I've had new hobbies, I got to try out the "Things to do at home list". Using the internet, I still got to communicate with my friends despite the lockdown and being at home. I also had more time to chill at home and watch a lot of movies, dramas, animes, etc. I've learnt the importance of keeping yourself safe from the virus or any other things that can cause you harm outside.

The things I dislike, there were times where I was fine with being at home all day, but of course, I'm like everyone else, I like going outside, going to school, hanging out with my friends, just basically enjoying outdoors.

What I've been doing regarding fitness, I've done some exercises such as stretching, jumping, squats. I've also balanced a diet, I ate healthier meals, eating more vegetables and fruits. I avoided junk foods like chips, chocolates, coke, etc.

~~~
For the starter, I would like to do jump rope because it can increase your muscle tone, burns calories. I would like to play badminton for the activity because badminton is one of my favourite sports, it doesn't need a lot of people to play,
it passes the "10 people bubble".
For the warm down game, I'd like to do octopus because I know people would want to play it as well as I do, it also doesn't need a lot of people to play it. And people in my class are familiar with that game, they know how to play it since we always play it as the warm-up in P.E.
Watch Out! Princess Jellyfish
Kumusta mga kapamilya at kaibigan! My name is Skyler and I’m here to share and give you information about Rare Jellyfishes living in the world, in the ocean rather.  Sit back and relax and get your popcorn, be prepared to be amazed because it can even blow your mind.
Just look how beautiful they are! Yes it’s beautiful but that doesn’t mean it can’t kill and sting you.  Like they said “Don’t judge a book but its cover”, be careful!.
Flower Hat Jelly
I’m going to start with a question, do you know what a “Flower Hat Jelly” is? Have you seen it before? Well here’s the picture…
Flower hat jelly
My resources:
Flower Hat Jelly is a rare species that you can only find in the West Pacific off of Southern Japan. It also has a scientific name, called “Olindias Formosus”, although it looks like a Jellyfish because of it's tentacles, but this creature is a jelly.  It is rare because of it’s multi coloured tentacles trailing from a translucent, that’s why it is recognizable and interesting.
The Flower Hat Jelly also has tentacles around its rim of its bell, it can grow to 15 cm. It can live around 4 to 5 months.  It eats small fish for it’s diet, it uses its tentacles to catch prey easily. No need to fear because it isn’t deadly to humans, but its sting is powerful enough to leave a rash, now that is painful. Here’s what I think, I think the Flower Hat Jelly is called Flower Hat Jelly because it looks like a hat and the tentacles made it look like a plant nor a flower.
Cauliflower Jellyfish also known as Crown Jellyfish
Related imageHere’s another one, Do you know what “Cauliflower Jellyfish” is? It sounds really healthy though, here’s a picture.
The Cauliflower Jellyfish resembles a big cauliflower. It lives around the mid-Pacific Indo-Pacific, and it is also found in Atlantic ocean off of West Africa.
It also has a scientific name called “Coronatae”.
It has a magnificent colour and it's tentacles almost has a translucent colour.
It lives in the ocean, not deep though, It can grow really large, to 1.5 feet to 1.9 feet. Sounds like dinner is ready!.
Crystal Jellyfish
Here’s the third one and it is called “Crystal Jellyfish” known as “aequorea victoria”.
It is found along the North America west-coast of the Pacific Ocean.
This Jellyfish is almost entirely transparent and colourless, sometimes it is difficult to resolve.Image result for crystal jellyfish
It has a powerful mouth that extend to it's bell margin. But have no effect on humans.
It's tentacles are almost thin just like a hair.
It looks like a gypsum gem.
The deeper it swims in the ocean, the brighter the jellyfish glows, it's almost unbelievable!.
Phyllorhiza Punctata known as White-spotted Jellyfish or the floating bell
White-spotted Jellyfish swimmingIt is native to the West Pacific from Australia to Japan, it kind of looks like the Cauliflower Jellyfish though.
It is easy to recognise because of it's large, semi-transparent, rounded bell covered with white dots, the trailing tentacles also has white spots. It grows 50 cm in diametre.
It lives in oceans and coastal water.
Although it looks like a wee bit of Cauliflower Jellyfish.
It has white-spotted dots on it's dome
Lampocteis known as Bloody-comb Jellyfish and Ctenophore known as Comb Jelly
Image result for comb jellies
They look different because of the bloody colour. Depending on the species, adult ctenophores range from a few millimetres to 1.5 m.  It looks like a human lungs to me and people said it looks like an alien or something weird.
Chrysaora Achlyos known as Black Sea Nettle
Black Jellyfish or Sarlacc Jellyfish,
Black sea nettles are so called because of their dark coloration. is a species or a jellyfish that can be found in the water of Pacific Ocean. Though there are reports of sightings as far sas North as British Columbia. The black sea nettle can be big, with a bell diameter potentially up to 1 metre and oral arms extending to 5 or 6 metres.
Distinctive opaque, dark purple to nearly black are the colours of this jellyfish.
Marginal sense organs are spaced around the bell margin after every set of 3 tentacles, for a total of 8.
Phacellophora camtschatica known as the fried egg jellyfish (Hmmm! Breakfast! Good with bacon)
Image result for fried egg jellyfishThe fried egg jellyfish is a very large jellyfish, with a bell up to 2 feet in a diametre and each tentacles are up to 6 metres. This is a cool-water jellyfish that can be found in many parts of the world’s ocean.
Image result for fried egg jellyfish
Because of this jellyfish's sting is so weak, many sea plankton, fishes, and small crabs regularly ride on it's bell and steals food from its tentacles and oral arms.
Image result for Atolla jellyfishAtolla jellyfish (it looks like a wee bit of UFO) the Coronate medusa
It is a deep sea-crown jelly found around the world, it is in deep red colour.  It is a deep-sea jellyfish. It typically has 20 orange-red tentacles and one abnormally large tentacle (larger than the rest).  When it attacks, it will launch a series of flashes, it draws predators.
Narcomedusae
It has a dome-shaped bell with thin sides, it almost have a transparents colour.  It only has four tentacles which is attached above the lobed margin. It has two stomach pouches, it is use to fill the pouches with prey, it's mostly inhabitants of the open sea and and deeps waters.
Image result for NarcomedusaeThere isn’t much information about this Jellyfish but I put it in here anyway because this type of jellyfish are rare and they look interesting and pretty.
Resources: Link, link
Moon Jellyfish known as “aurelia aurita”
Moon Jellyfish are relative to Crystal jellyfish although it’s not as big as the Crystal Jellyfish.  This jellyfish is not rare because you can find it around the ocean.  This jellyfish is translucent just like the Crystal Jellyfish, it has small-thin tentacles.
This jellyfish has a flower-shaped thingy (I actually don’t know what it’s called) under its dome.  It eats plankton for it's food, it glows bright under the water, I don’t know if it glows because of the sea color but in my opinion, it glows.
Porpita Porpita known as the “blue button”
We don’t have much information about this jellyfish, I don’t know either if its rare or not.
Image result for Porpita PorpitaIt is found in tropical waters from California to the tropical Pacific, the Atlantic and Indian oceans.  It has blue-ish (more like greenish blue) colour, probably turquoise colour.  Some of it's tentacles are small and some aren’t, it has a transparent blue tentacles.
This jellyfish isn’t deadly and it doesn’t sting, but it cause skin irritation.
The hard golden brown float is round, almost flat, and about an inch wide.
It is very small, like ½ and the tentacles are under its rim.
Resources : link, link
Now you all know how cool all the rare jellyfish living in the world are, were you surprised? Were you shocked. Watch out!, because you might not notice beside you there’s a jellyfish ready to sting you! Kidding, but be careful though.  Well that is all, thanks for reading, hope y’all liked it. Paalam! (Bye!).
The Present
W.A.L.T:  Write a narrative
Success Criteria
I know I will be successful when….
  • The title is suitable for the text.
  • The orientation tells who the story is about, and when and where the story happened.
  • The complication describes a problem and explains what happened next.
  • The resolution explains how the problem was solved.
  • Seeks feedback and makes changes to texts to improve clarity and meaning.
In AkoNgatahi we had to write a narrative about a video. It was about a boy opening a present that was a dog with three legs. Here is the video of the present. I hope you enjoy my story.
“THE MOST AWESOME PRESENT IN THE WORLD”
It was Saturday morning, I just finished eating my food then I went to the bathroom to brush my teeth and to take a bath. My room was really dark and scary like the in͎side of a haunted house, my mum was holding a box and open the door she told me to open it. I was really confused like my mind is going to blow up, I was really curious to open it, “Here’s the time I open it”. I opened the box and a dog popped out, I was like “Awesome”  I check his feet and became mad to my mum,I threw him on the ground because I thought we wasn’t able to play with me, I remove the box on my way and I continued playing with my
Video games while the dog wants to get my attention by being cute, clumsy, playful, silly and funny.I was forcing myself not to laugh and smile. The dog saw a ball and he wants to get, the dog push the ball to me because he wants me to play catch with him then I realized he just want to play with me because he was bored and alone. I gave him a chance to play with him so I turn off my Xbox generator and the dog and I went outside and I told my mum, “Mum, we’ll be outside”.
“THE END”
