Burger Competition

Last week, Friday, we had a burger competition where we compete with other groups and have our own burger recipes.

Evaluation:

1. How does colour enhance the overall effects of our burgers? The colours are an important part of our burger because it determines the taste and flavour of our burger. Since colour is often the first element noticed in the appearance of a food product. For example, the colour of our burger; The bun is a brioche bun, it had a shiny appearance and golden brown colour. The pattie was made of chicken and other spices, it was crispy and have a golden appearance. The vegetables gave a pleasant colour, assuming it is fresh because it was all in shades of green. The sauces we used was Japanese mayonnaise and oyster sauce, of course, we can presume that it is a chicken katsu style burger.

2. How does the texture affect the feel of the burger as you eat it? Texture plays an important role when it comes to food. This is because the texture dictates the quality of the food, as well as its nutrition and aroma. For our burger product, the texture of the buns was soft, it was very delicate. The pattie was crispy, tender, juicy and flavourful. The vegetables were fresh, crunchy and chewy. The sauces were creamy and slippery.

3. What did the burger taste like? The burger was heavenly and scrumptious. I didn't expect it would taste that good, I thought it would be too spicy because we put chilli powder and flakes to it. The buns were chewy and doughy and warm. The pattie was leguminous and very original.

Ingredients that enhanced the flavour of the patties were chilli flakes and chilli powder. If we were only to put salt and pepper, the pattie would taste plain but I am really glad that we used chilli powder and chilli flakes because it enhanced the flavour.

Reading Reflection - Wananga

In wananga time, I began reading a comic, technically, it's called a "Manwha". A manwha is a comic or a graphic novel in South Korean style.

It's called "The Villain's Savior"

Summary: Set on a path to tragedy and misfortune from a young age, Aseph Randell is doomed to die a villain. That is, until the mysterious Elzay Tiathe appears in his life with a promise: "I can save you." After having vivid visions of him for so long, can Elzay untangle the twisted fate tied to Aseph... or will they both be dragged down together?

Manwha Information:

Authors: Myeong rang / Jaessun

Genres: Korean , Manhwa , Josei , Drama , Fantasy , Historical , Isekai , Magic , Mystery , Romance , Time Travel

Release status: Completed

Year of Release: 2019

Year of Complete: 2021

I've only read 2 chapters and I'm already hooked on the story. The beginning was very tragic and had some gruesome scene. From what I've read, the main lead - Aseph- didn't have a very good childhood. His dad was alcoholic and abusive, his mum had another lover, his mum and he was abused by his father. His parents died due to the fire set in their house, luckily, he survived. Aseph was then adopted by another possessive and abusive woman who was rich and powerful. He grew up in her household until one night, he decided he wouldn't cry anymore, he wouldn't beg for mercy, for forgiveness. So he killed his so-called mother.

Corrosion Experiment - Science

 Corrosion Experiment 1

When metals are exposed to the environment they can deteriorate, or break down. Scientists call this process corrosion. Rust is the term used to describe the corrosion of iron.

Corrosion Experiment 2

Iron is a relatively cheap metal so it is widely used in industry. Scientists have had to develop ways of protecting iron from rusting.

Aim 1: To investigate the factors that cause rusting in Iron.

Aim 2: To investigate a number of techniques that may prevent iron from rusting.

Equipment needed for both experiments:

  • 8 test tubes
  • test tube racks
  • a bung
  • 8 iron nails
  • boiled water
  • tap water
  • salty water
  • cooking oil
  • calcium chloride
  • vaseline
  • nail polish
  • zinc
Method 1:
  • Iron
  • Iron nail covered in vaseline
  • Iron nail painted with nail polish or paint
  • Iron nail with a small piece of magnesium ribbon wrapped around it, or with zinc pallets added to the test tube
  • Iron nail and tap water
  • iron nail and salty water
  • Iron nail and boiled water
  • Iron nail, boiled water and oil
  • Iron nail and calcium chloride sealed with a bung
Method 2:
  • Iron - corrosion
  • Iron nail covered in vaseline
  • Iron nail painted with nail polish or paint
  • Iron nail with a small piece of magnesium ribbon wrapped around it, or with zinc pallets added to the test tube
  • Iron nail and tap water - corrosion
  • iron nail and salty water - corrosion
  • Iron nail and boiled water
  • Iron nail, boiled water and oil
  • Iron nail and calcium chloride sealed with a bung

Actual Experiment Assigned

Conclusion:

As we can see from the photos, some of the nails rusted and some didn't.

Experiment A
A corrosion process is seen through the whole nail but only some parts of it rusted, which is surprising because when the iron is exposed to air, it is supposed to corrode. Knowing it's been left in the science lab for a couple of weeks, the whole nail should've been corroded.

Experiment B
In our second experiment, the nail corroded in the water because when iron touches iron it creates a chemical reaction that causes nails to rust.

Experiment C
When iron (nail) is in contact with water and oxygen, it corrodes and when salt is present, it tends to rust quickly.

Experiment D
Without water, the oxygen wouldn't be able to perform oxidation (a chemical reaction involving atoms). To prevent rust, we need to add an ingredient, to simplify, we need to prevent H2O from contact with the water and iron. Using oil would be effective as oil and water do not mix.

Experiment E
In the test tube, there is a nail (iron) and calcium chloride inside. To prevent oxygen from getting inside, we used a bung to cover up the test tube. In our observation, the nail didn't rust.

Experiment F
When iron is covered in vaseline, a petroleum-based mineral that consists of oils and waxes. We put the iron covered in vaseline in the water but it didn't corrode as much as the others. Oil and wax don't mix with water, therefore, it's a good metal lubricant because it prevents rust.

Experiment G
The nail painted with nail polish corroded in the water.

Experiment H
The nail in the water with zinc corroded.

Shark Finning - Social Studies

What is a Shark Finning?

Shark Finning is a horrendous act of cutting the fins of sharks, then discarding the rest back in the ocean. Often, the sharks are still alive, though, for some that are thrown back in the ocean, experience and slow and painful death.

Effects of Shark Finning

Shark Finning seriously damage the environment and the economy because firstly, shark finning is one of the reasons why the shark population is decreasing, not only that, but shark has low reproductive rates, which means, it makes it difficult for the population to go up.

Did you know that 88 to 100 million sharks die every year?

Sharks are at the top of the food chain. The reduction of sharks species can disrupt the entire marine ecosystem. When the shark population decrease, it could cause severe ecological consequences due to the leftover preys.

Shark Fin Soup

Shark Fin Soup is a popular Chinese delicacy that people consume during major celebrations such as weddings, birthdays, parties, etc. For instance, when a person eats shark fin soup, their image would be seen as someone who is a higher rank, meaning 'rich' and 'powerful'.

Facts:

  • Shark Finning has decreased by 90 per cent in the last 15 years.
  • Shark Finning is a multi-billion dollar industry and some countries in Asia receives a lot of money, which makes it easier for them to access shark fins.
  • Sharks are also killed due to their teeth, jaws, cartilage and liver oil. These parts extracted from the sharks are used for cosmetics, medicine, clothing and skincare products.

Pink Shirt Day!!!

Today is "Pink Shirt Day", 21/05/21.

Pink Shirt Day is a day celebrated annually across the world, to acknowledge this day, people wear pink shirts that symbolises power in order to stand together and speak up against bullying.

Pink shirt day originated back in 2007 in Canada, when two students stood up together against homophobic bullying after another student was harassed after wearing pink.

The Starfish Poem

In Social Studies, we had a task to do as a class, each one of us had to read two lines from a poem called, "The Starfish Poem". After that, we had to blog about its message trying to come across.

THE  STARFISH  POEM

Once upon a time there was a wise man

who used to go to the ocean

to do his writing.

He had a habit of walking

on the beach

before he began his work.

One day he was walking along

the shore.

As he looked down the beach,

he saw a human

figure moving like a dancer.

He smiled to himself to think

of someone who would

dance to the day.

So he began to walk faster

to catch up.

As he got closer, he saw

that it was a young man

and the young man wasn't dancing,

but instead he was reaching

down to the shore,

picking up something

and very gently throwing it

into the ocean.

As he got closer he called out,

"Good morning! What are you doing?"

The young man paused,

looked up and replied,

"Throwing starfish in the ocean."

"I guess I should have asked,

why are you throwing starfish in the ocean?"

"The sun is up and the tide is going out.

And if I don't throw them in they'll die."

"But, young man, don't you realize that

there are miles and miles of beach

and starfish all along it.

You can't possibly make a difference!"

The young man listened politely.

Then bent down, picked up another starfish

and threw it into the sea,

past the breaking waves and said-

"It made a difference for that one."

Meaning & Evidence:

In my opinion, the meaning of this poem is about even making small action can make a big difference. The reason why this is what I thought of is that the line said "If I don't throw them in, they'll die". The sun is going up and the tide will go down, which means, the water levels will go down and the starfishes will die because there's no water where they were at. So the guy, who was throwing them had to do it, or else, they'll die. By throwing them, where there's water, the starfished will live longer.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch - News Article

For the extension work in Social Studies, we had to make our own new article outlining the problem in the Pacific Ocean. Also, we had to meet the requirements like including the causes and effects of the Great  Pacific Garbage Patch, an explanation of the problem and a good headline.

Key Words:

  • Environmental catastrophe
  • Plastic particles
  • Plastic soup
  • Ingest
  • Accumulate

Great Pacific Garbage Patch - Social Studies

In our lesson in social studies, we are learning 'How to understand people's management of resources impacts on environmental and societal sustainability. Within this topic, we learnt about important details such as the "Great Pacific Garbage Patch", when it occured, how it occred, how much garbage are there in the ocean, its effects on the human and marine life, what are the movements created in order to reduce the garbage dumped in the ocean, etc. We also had an activity where we comprehend about the causes and effects of the environmental crisis. After brainstorming about the causes and effects, we had to list them down.

Due to the usage of plastics that have increased throughout the history, there has been continous damage in our natural resources. The more this goes on, we will lose the only place where we can live.

If we are able to reduce the use of plastics, we decrease the pollution such as gas emissions. When we reduce pollution, our natural resources won't stop to produce more oxygen and energy.
