Maori - Hangi

In Maori, yesterday, our class made our own presentation of how to make a hangi, we can work individually or in partners. Lhysette and I decided to be partners for this activity and we did really well on making the presentation on Google Drawing, we're both pretty happy and satisfied with the way it turned out.

Hangi links to the Matariki, traditionally, Maori people make hangi during Nu la (New Year), after it cooks, they offer it to wairua (spirits).

With the Hangi, I've learnt that Hangi is New Zealand's traditional way/method of cooking. They cook it underground in an umu (an Earth oven) and wait for about 3 to 4 hours or so for it to cook. It's similar to "luau" in Hawaii and "umu" in Samoa. It feeds a lot of people like your whanau (family), the manuhiri (visitors).

Interesting fact: Umu is called earth oven in Maori and a traditional method of cooking in Samoa.

Would I try hangi out in the future? No, it will take a lot of time, patient, people and effort; to prepare and if you were to feed a lot of people, they'll lose patience and be starving by then. It will also taste earthy which I'm not a big fan of.

Hurumanu - Music - New Zealand Musician and Band

Today, for Music, we did an activity where we write down on a piece of paper a famous Musician; Soloist and Band. I chose "Lorde" for a New Zealand Soloist and "The Exponents" for The New Zealand Band. After that, we need to make a slideshow presentation about it and post it on our blog.

It's Cool To Be Kind - C.I.P (Community Impact Project)

Today, in CIP (Community Impact Project) the class shared what was on the new lately about All Blacks and what recently happened to them.

We've done a research about All Blacks, we then put down what we know, what we want to know and what we have found out about All Blacks. I don't really watch the news and I'm not a fan of rugby but a lot of people talk about All Blacks.

Hurumanu - Science - My Investigation; Carbon Footprint & Ecological Footprint

My Investigation
  1. Aim: To look at how I can prevent climate change in the future.

    1. Complete the activity 'Ecological Handprint'.

    2. Complete the activity 'Carbon Footprint'.

    3. Write down your 10 changes to climate change below. Using ideas from the Ecological Hand print and Carbon Footprint list 10 changes that you can make to stop Climate change?

    1. I need to check the labels when buying food; for example, go to the butcher when buying meat. And try to buy local foods.
    2. Repair things that can still be repaired and used than throwing them out.
    3. When I see rubbish lying around, throw them away.
    4. Grow foods so I don't have to buy, so I can eat the food that I grow.
    5. Plant more.
    6. Talk to parents and friends about protecting the environment and the changed we can do.
    7.  Conserve energy and turning off the appliances that aren't needed.
    8.  I need to compost and recycle more instead of throwing them.
    9.  I need to be more considerate of the environment when buying.
    10.  Walk to the mall instead of riding a vehicle.

Hurumanu - Science - Climate Change and the Future

Aim; To look at the different ways we can prevent climate change in the future.

Changing Our Future

Name 3 fossil fuels? Coal, Oil, Gas

What is the cost? Carbon Dioxide, it blankets the Earth, trapping the heat

The CO2 level has soured since when? Since the start of the Industrial Revolution

What are the effects in the UK?

  1.  Twenty warmest years
  2.  Species could disappear
  3.  Could suffer lethal heatwaves
How many climate refugees will there be in Britain by 2050? 200 million climate refugees

When will Fairborn be flooded?  It will be flooded in the next 26 years

What are some of the other things that will be 'swallowed by the waves'?
  1. Over 1.5m homes in England are at risk from flooding by 2080
  2.  100,000 homes are at risk from Coastal Erosion
  3.  1000 toxic sites are also at risk
How can we stop climate change?
  1. Reducing and replacing gas boilers
  2. Plant 1.5 billion trees
  3. Running the cars on solar and hydro batteries
What ideas are school children having about climate change?
  1.  Protesting
  2.  The students can die of overheating
  3. Students panics and worries what the future will be like in the next few years
  4.  Politicians don't take charge until the youths start to speak up
  5. Worried of their future kids getting affected by climate change
  6. Reduce using cars, instead, ride bikes and walk
What is the atmosphere called?

a Waste____________ Dump_________.

What is the last statement the reporter made?

We __know__________what we need to do, we have got the ______technology___________. What we lack is the

 _____political__________ will______.

What places will be affected? Various places in New Zealand

What else do we need to think about? People in general, developing new areas for people to live in, making sure to build houses that isn't not near the sea because when it floods or there's a tsunami, it will more likely swallow the houses

What other places around NZ will be affected? Pacific Islands in New Zealand

What does this do to our drinking water? Since we drink water from the undergrounds, when drinking water from the undergrounds that  are in the Coastals, it will more likely to have saltwater which is bad for our health.

What are the main concerns?
  1.   Coastal Flooding
  2.   Coastal Erosion

What can we do?

  1. Reducing emissions
  2. Taking out less fossil fuels, for example, using public transports
  3. Buy an efficient car, like electric cars
  4. Use public transport
  5. Make sure you don't use much energy when building a house

What is the one, silver bullet solution?
there isn't one

What is the mix of things we need to start doing?
  1.   Getting to be able to use renewable force to generate energy
  2.   Transport, getting away with vehicles that depend on fossil fuels
  3.   Using public transport
What are 3 others you can think of?
  1. Walking to school
  2. Reduce, reuse, recycle, and repair
  3. Using less amount of energy at home
My Investigation
Where does our food come from?

  • Choose your favourite food.   Sushi is one of my favourite food

  1. Upload a picture of it.
  2. Image result for sushi
  3. Draw a picture of it on A4.

  • Where does the food come from (e.g. is it from another province or country, was it purchased or made locally)? It had been first made around in the 8th century of Japan. But is now made from all around the world. There's another version of it but made in Korea, called "Gimbap". The rice that is used to make gimbap is much sweeter than sushi

  • How many kilometres away did the food travel to get to you? 9,517 km, takes 13 hours and 50 minutes from Japan to New Zealand, but it's not the exact amount of time.

  • What are the main ingredients?
  1. Vinegard Rice that's been combined with other seasonings.
  2. Dried Seaweed
  3. Fillings of your choices, can be tuna, raw fish, cucumber, etc.

  • How is the food packaged? It's usually packaged in a plastic container but you don't need a plastic container if you make it yourself

  • What resources do you need to produce this food item (e.g. land, water, oil, food, etc.)?  Land, Water and Food

  • Would this item have been processed?  Yes

  • Is there anything unique or significant about the food item (e.g. fair-trade, local)? It has travelled far and been loved by many worldwide

  • What else do you notice about this food that affects its climate friendliness? You don't need to use a lot of fossil fuels. It doesn't use much energy as well. It also depends if people make it traditionally.

  • Do you think this food is climate-friendly (Circle)?       YES   NO

  • Why? You don't need to use a lot of fossil fuels when making this food because you can get dried seaweed at a local store, season your rice if you have rice (can also use leftover rice).

Maori - Ta Moko

Yesterday, in Maori class, we learnt about Maori Face Tattoo, in Maori, it's called Ta Moko. We watched a video about the Legend of Mataora and Niwareka. After watching the video, we were told to write the story again but in our own words, writing down the Maori words as well. Mataora is the husband and Niwareka is the wife, Rarohenga/Rarohinga is the underworld, a place where all spirits lives, it's not hell nor heaven.

"The Legend of Mataora and Niwareka"

Mataora and Niwareka, they were living in peace, they were happy but one day Mataora he got jealous and hit Niwareka. Niwareka was hurt, she went to her people, to Rarohinga, the underworld. Mataora was guilty, he regretted his actions towards Niwareka, he wanted her back. He decided that he’ll go after his wife.

He then drew a hopara makaura on his face because he wanted to show Niwareka’s dad that he’s strong enough to protect his wife. Once he had finished, he travelled miles to miles to go where his wife, Niwareka is. Once he got to the underworld (Rarohenga/Rarohinga), his face was smudged with paint because he travelled through rain and the paint ran down his face. Niwareka’s family insulted Mataora because it wasn’t a Ta Moko he’s wearing. Mataora begged for his wife and her family’s forgiveness. Once he got forgiven, he was taught what Ta Moko actually is, he got it tattooed on his face, Niwareka’s father told Mataora that once he got the tattoo, he’ll never dare to hurt his daughter again. They headed back to their home. Niwareka, brining a Taniko and Mataora bringing a Ta Moko.

After that, we had an activity about it as well where we get to put draw hopara makaura (Maori Tattoo) on a face template. I researched pictures on googles for inspiration on my design and I ended up with this.

I put traditional crown with feathers to make it look more traditional-like.

On Tuesday, In drama, our teacher wanted us to make a poem, that will be performed by groups no more than 3 or pairs. Rieya, Shiela and I were in a group but Shiela had ESOL so it was only me and Rieya. Rieya and I brainstormed ideas and we finally came up with a BTS Poem, since the both of us are ARMY's (Adorable Representatives for MC Youth), the fandom name of BTS. The poem can be any topic, but there were certain pieces of information we need to put, if we're doing a famous person, their name has to be in there, four adjectives to describe them, etc.

Both os of added movements with the poem like hand gestures and others. Rieya and I were really happy with how our poem turned out, we both shared ideas and both of us worked on it really hard and we did our best.

This our poem

Bangtan Sonyeondan

Wind speed - Making an anemometer.

Anemometer

MATERIALS

  1. Straw  4x
  2. Styrofoam Cup  4x
  3.   Pencil
  4.   Pin
  5.   Tape

STEPS

  1. Put holes on both the sides of the cups
  2. Tape the straw together, making it longer that's why we need 4 straws because the straws will be too small, the cups aren't gonna do what they're supposed to do because they're going to be too close to each other.
  3. Poke the straw on the holes on each cups securing it with tape to it won't fall of when it spins.
  4.  Put the straws with cups together, making a cross , one on top of another
  5. Pin the middle of the straws through the eraser of the pencil, make sure it doesn't come off
  6. After you've finished, test it if it moves with the wind, if it spins by blowing on the cups.
Once you have made an anemometer we are going to record the wind speed.

Group size: 5

I had Kayla, Jayden and James in my group

You will need:

Anemometer (above)

Roles:

  • Timekeeper
  • Counter
  • Recorder
  • Anemometer Manager
  • Wind generator
  1. Mount the anemometer in a place that has full access to the wind from all directions.
  2. When the timekeeper says "Go", the counter in each group will count how many times the marked cup passes them in one minute and write it down.
  3. If possible, repeat the above step four (4) times and record the average number of spins on the chart.

FINDINGS

  • Record how many times it spins using the table below.
You will need to create the wind yourself by blowing. Get 4 different wind speeds by blowing.

You will need to time them and count the number of spins.

Time IntervalNumber of Spins
1.10s11
2.10s13
3.10s7
4.10s24
  • Can you make a statement connecting the number of spins of your anemometer and the speed of the wind?  The last source of wind made my group and I's anemometer spins faster and since it spins faster, the number of spins increases.

CONCLUSION:

My group and I tried another technique, more like another source of the wind. Our teacher suggested us a really good idea, a heat pump, since we use it in the classroom because the weather was cold. I figured out that it's because the anemometer is closer to the source of the wind. The heat pump makes our anemometer spins faster, since it spins faster, the number of spins increases. Overall, the heat pump spins faster out of 4 of them.

CIP - It's Cool To Be Kind

"You Can Make A Difference Today"

For period 4, we were given selections of what we should do relating to Kidscan:

1. DLO Poster about KidsCan and how they help people.
2. Write a letter of appreciation to KidsCan.
3. Create a video explaining what KidsCan does.

I chose number 1. I researched about KidsCan in their site and what they do to help children around the world. This is their site link: https://www.kidscan.org.nz/

I made a poster using Google Drawing, putting pictures down and wrote all the information down, writing it in my own words.

It'd be really helpful if you donate in KidsCan, you can make a big difference in children's future.

CIP - It's Cool To Be Kind

Last week for C.I.P (Community Impact Project) our CIP group were having a Mufti Day for around the school. All of us had two options either we make posters or D.L.O (Digital Learning Object). Bh (The name of one class in year 7 and 8's block) put up all the posters from around the school and for the people who were making a DLO, posted it on their blog and it's also on the TV (TV here in highschool are where we put up important information that had happened in the past, some upcoming events and some achievements). The Mufti Day will be happening tomorrow, 8th of August, Thursday.

For the planning process, we were into groups no more than 4, we brainstormed ideas of what the theme could be; wearing for Mufti Day. My friends and I had a few ideas. I had a lot of stuff in mind that I thought everyone has in their closet.

  • Black & White (B&W)
  • Denim
  • Edgy
  • Bright Colours
  • Pigtails

We all then our ideas to the class, we also voted for the best theme. The majority won, we ended up with the theme "Radical Rainbow".

We are raising money for Kids Can, a charity/program that provides children with their needs from all around New Zealand.

To have a successful Mufti Day, we need to follow the theme, bring a gold coin for donation and have fun.

We are spreading kindness to the community by helping and donating money for a program that helps children from all around New Zealand.

This is my poster, I posted it on my blog as well from last week.

Hurumanu - Solar Energy

Solar Energy

Catching the sun movie

Materials:

  1.  Cups x4
  2.  Water
  3.  Tinfoil
  4.  2 sheets of white paper
  5.  1 sheet of black paper
  6.  Thermometer
  7.  1 large cup
  8.  1 heat lamp

Steps

  1. Collect your materials, fill the 4 cups with water, 3/4 each cups
  2. Using the large cup, choose one of the small cups to put the large cup on, to cover it
  3. The cup with the large cup covering it, put it on top of one of the white paper
  4.  Put one of the cup on the white paper again, you'll have two cups left, put one of the cup left on the foil, for the last cup, put it on the black paper
  5.  Put the paper and foils close together, light up the cups just 20cm away  from the cups
  6.  Using a thermometer, measure the temperature of the water after 15 minutes after you checked that, wait for 30 minutes and then after that, wait for 45 minutes. When measuring the temperature, make sure you leave it for 2 minutes.

Which surface conducts/attracts the most heat?

Findings:

I found out that the cup on the tin foil conducts more heat than the rest of the cup.

Conclusion:

We did the experiment in the corner of the classroom. Each and one of us in my group took turns measuring the temperature of the water. The surfaces of the cups (where we put the cups on top of, a white paper for example) were next to each other. The cups of the tinfoil conducts more heat, it's like putting tinfoil in the oven, once it gets heated, it's gets warm, and we were using a heat lamp.
