Dirty Water Experiment - Filtration

Dirty Water Experiment

Aim: To make a filtration plant using household materials

What is filtration?

Filtration is separating solids from liquids by adding a medium through
which only the liquid can pass.
Examples are:
  1.  Brewing a coffee
  2.  Kidney
  3.  Separating dirty from water (Dirty water and a cloth)
  4. H.E.P.A (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) Filter (Air conditioner) and vacuum

Materials
  1. Paper Filter
  1. Sand
  1. Pebbles/stone
  1. Bottle
  1. Scissors
  1. Cup
  1. Dirty Water

Process - ( use verbs or doing words in each step )

Step 1
Cut the bottle into half to create a funnel and a container shape
Step 2
Put the top half upside down to join them together
STEP 3
Add layers of filter paper then sand then pebbles.
For the filter paper, it will look like a thick-circle shaped piece of paper,
you’re going to need to fold it in quarters and open one slit
STEP 4
Get a cup of dirty water, any liquid you want, your choice but we used
dirty water with ground coffee in it, to experiment with
STEP 5
Pour dirty water into the funnel carefully so it won’t spill
STEP 6
Observe how the water flows now the water has to be not flowing and
if it’s clear (well you don’t really expect it to be clear as actual water so don’t get your expectation high)
then you’re all good to go and you did a great job but if it’s still dirty, maybe you should fix it and try
again

Measurements

Write a short sentence about the water every 1 minute.
Include 'How much water has filtered through', 'How fast it is dripping through', and
'How clear the water is'.

We got the water to drip! It’s not clear though however there wasn’t any dirt to it.
The experiment turned out well I wouldn’t say it was our best work.

I was the one who cut the bottle into half, Rieya did the folding of the filter paper,
Lhysette was in charge of getting the sand, Rieya was in charge of getting the pebbles,
Lhysette was  also in charge of getting the dirty water
As I said you don’t really expect it to be clear as actual water so don’t get your expectation high.

What I feel:
My group and I are pretty happy with our work but it could’ve been much better if the water was
a little bit clear.

My next steps:
My next step is, placing the layers properly because the water wasn’t clear enough but it’s clean

Group members: Me, Lhysette, Rieya and Shiela

Reflection of Cybersmart

In Term 1, we focused on being a Smart Learner, I learnt about not sharing your personal and private information because it's important and people might hack your account. It's also bad because they might use your account and pretend that it's you because your name and information are under that account. I also learnt that you should make a password that is hard enough for the hackers to know. I also learnt that you shouldn't post your photos because people might use them to catfish someone else, you can't also take photos or share online of plate numbers, address number, phone number, and etc. because you don't know someone might stalk you, threaten you or do anything that could harm you and your family.
I also learnt shortcuts

In Term 2, we focused on Smart Footprint, I easily learnt about how you can find information about someone else with social media, news, magazines and etc.

In Term 3, we focused on having a Smart Relationship, I learnt about how you can start a conversation with someone just by commenting on their posts, I also learnt that you should give positive, thoughtful and helpful comments and also give, feedback and feedforward so that person can learn a lot and be engaged on what they're doing.

In Term 4, we focused on being a Smart User, I learnt about how Google find the documents, sites you are looking for just by searching something and using the right words.  In this topic, we get to join the summer learning journey and could possibly get a prize.

My favourite thin in Cybersmart this year was that you learn a lot of stuff you didn't really know about.

Something I didn't enjoy was people not doing their work, it makes them look like they didn't learn anything.

Something my Cybersmart teacher did well was teaching, explaining and listening to students ideas.

Something she could do better is making everyone quiet, some students were really really loud and just can't stop talking until you yell at them.

Science Roadshow

The whole class had to pay $2 to attend the Science Roadshow, some of us didn't get to pay so our homeroom teachers' covered up for them for free! For 50 Science Inventions that we get to experience and try out! We spent the whole period 1 & 2 on the Learning Street in the Science Room with 7TZ.  The other year 7 classes went There we were introduced to Shane the MASSIVE GUY & Samantha. Shane showed us fire in ice and did an experiment about it.  The experiment was the ball the couldn't fit in the hole, he asked for a volunteer in the audience, Shontelle, in my class, was picked because she was the first one who raised hands. Shane told Shontelle to put the ball (It was an 8 numbered ball from billiards) on the hole (those wands) it did, but when the hole with the handle was put in a small bucket filled with liquid nitrogen. Shontelle and Shane used safety glasses and gloves for safety of course, Shane took out the hole with the handle and it was smoking and freezing cold! Well like a cold smoke coming from your freezer, then Shane told Shontelle to put the ball on top of the hole to see if the ball still goes through but surprisingly the ball got stuck in the hole, it didn't go through, Shane asked Shontelle to do it again and it did the same thing. You knew you lick a popsicle and it so cold that your tongue sticks to it? Well, I feel like that's what exactly happened.

The next experiment we did was burning a galvanized sheet metal (A galvanize is coated with zinc, when a metal gets rusty because of the weather and temperature it makes a metal rusty and to recycle it, they coat it with zinc so it can be used).  The fire changed colours from yellow-ish orange to lime-ish colour, it made galvanized sheet metal melt and turned into glass and turned a hole in the middle.

After all the experiments, we explored and tried all the inventions, they were all pretty cool, there were so much questions in my head in each and one of them, I wish I can tell them to you all but all of you might get bored so I'm just going to make this blog post shorter.

☢ Testing Sugar Experiment ☢

☢ Testing for Simple Sugars  (Benedict's Test) ☢

Rieya and I partnered up on this experiment, I took the photos while she did the experiment.

Aim

I want to find out how to test for simple sugars.

Simple sugars are carbohydrates that are quickly absorbed by the body to produce energy. They are also classified as “simple” because they contain only one or two units of sugar or saccharides. Also referred to as simple carbohydrates, these sugars are found naturally in a variety of foods that we consume daily.

www.livestrong.com

Equipment
  • Safety glasses
  • Bunsen burner
  • Test tubes
  • Test tube tongs
  • Benedict's Solution
  • Food sample
Method

  1. Place about 2mL of the food sample into a test tube and then add 5 drops of Benedict's solution and 5ml of water
  2. Gently heat the test tube over a blue flame.  DO NOT BOIL!

Results

A positive test for a simple sugar result in Benedict's Solution changing from a blue colour to a yellow colour to an orange/red colour.

Conclusion

The colour changed, it didn't boil either which is good, the colour went from blue to orange-ish red colour and it was really cool watching the colour change, it was satisfying!

Fun day with my fam!

When all the year 7's when to sailing, I didn’t get to come but no worries.  My family and I had some bonding time, we had picnic.  Of course I was sad because I didn’t get to come to sailing but that’s alright.

My relative came with us too. We had picnic at Hagley Park and after that we had a party at my aunt's house. We ate cheesecake with oreo crust, we watched movies but before going to Hagley Park my parents went to work first. Okay let's continue what we started. The movie we watched was a Filipino movie, it's called "Extra Service" by Arci Munoz, Coleen Garcia, and Jessy Mendiola. It's about 3 spy girls who needs to bring back the three gemstones of the Philippines, the Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao gem.
The movie was good, it was 9:30 pm already, we were really sleepy so we had to go home.
We had a lot of fun.
