Beatles Song - Social Studies
In Social Studies, we started to study the Beatles; How they came to New Zealand, how they came to fame and influenced the world with their music. The first activity was to listen to 4 of their songs and research the song you picked.
She Loves You - The Beatles
She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah
She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah
She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
[Verse 1: Paul McCartney & John Lennon]
You think you've lost your love
Well, I saw her yesterday
It's you she's thinking of
And she told me what to say
[Refrain: Paul McCartney & John Lennon]
She says she loves you
And you know that can't be bad
Yes, she loves you
And you know you should be glad
[Verse 2: Paul McCartney & John Lennon]
She said you hurt her so
She almost lost her mind
But now she said she knows
You're not the hurting kind
[Refrain: Paul McCartney & John Lennon]
She says she loves you
And you know that can't be bad
Yes, she loves you
And you know you should be glad, ooh
She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah
She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah
With a love like that
You know you should be glad
[Verse 3: Paul McCartney & John Lennon]
You know it's up to you
I think it's only fair
Pride can hurt you, too
Apologise to her
[Refrain: Paul McCartney & John Lennon]
Because she loves you
And you know that can't be bad
She loves you
And you know you should be glad, ooh
[Chorus: Paul McCartney & John Lennon]
She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah
She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah
With a love like that
You know you should be glad
[Outro: Paul McCartney & John Lennon]
With a love like that
You know you should be glad
With a love like that
You know you should be glad
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Setting - English
For this activity, we had to write narrative openings using our sensory language. We were given a choice to decide on the setting we will do our writings on.
What is a setting? A setting is a place or surroundings where an object is placed in a position. It contains the time and place to set a mood and give visualisation to the readers.
Write Your Own Narrative Opening! - English
In English, we had to write 3-5 narrative openings. For the narrative opening, there will be 5 photos for the visual prompts. We had to choose at least 3 photos to base our writing on.
I chose these three photos as my visual prompts.

The Battle of Passchendaele - Social Studies
This blogpost is an extension work once the ANZAC blogpost is finished. The extension work is about the Battle of Passchendaele which occurred during the First World War.
The Battle of Passchendaele: https://www.google.co.nz/maps/d/edit?mid=13HfN6O8qDhpkiAJ5l_u_X3DcTHeVgwkr&ll=51.313626001433065%2C2.335138916476951&z=8
"The Haka: Ka Mate"
Kikiki! Kakaka! | Let your valor rise! Let your valor rage! |
Then follows the main body of the haka:
Ka mate, ka mate! ka ora! ka ora! | 'Tis death! 'tis death! (or: I may die) 'Tis life! 'tis life! (or: I may live) |
What does this line refer to? "'Tis death! 'tis death! (or: I may die) 'Tis life! 'tis life! (or: I may live)"
I think this line refers to the possibilities of events or consequences that may happen. It's like saying "I might die" or "I might live". This I think regards fighting for one's country and protecting their loved ones, risking their lives. During the battle, there is 50 out of 50 per cent might die or live.
How is the haka used? The Haka is used to prepare the warriors mentally and physically for their battles, furthermore, to portray peace.
How was the Maori Battalion viewed? It is viewed with respect, which gave the warriors and the people motivation. It gave them strength, hope and perseverance.
How is the Haka symbolic now? The Haka symbolises respect; A war dance, a blessing, and significantly to honour people and to show tradition.
Where is the Haka used today? The Haka is now used as a ceremonial dance and as a challenge in the Maori Culture.

"Massive Pear" - Visual Art
We have been learning about miniature figures by "Slinkachu". The different techniques and angles and shots that are used effectively to make the figures realistic.
About Slinkachu's work (consider its purpose, how it is made, how it is viewed, and why it is interesting and valuable).
He has a big imagination and is very passionate about art. His art is not drawing on a paper but using miniature figures and small objects to create a scene which he takes photography shot with. His figurines come already made, most of them are made by a German company ‘Preiser’, some can be bought by model shops and online. He would also customise some them, adding elements such as colour - painting those mini-figures, moulding the figures using modelling clays, changing its leg and arm position. For some people, it may be viewed as ‘odd’ but it’s also interesting and intriguing because those kind of artworks are not common in this generation, not a lot of people would think of that idea. The interesting thing about his artwork is that he used small objects that are often seen as less valuable or important. I can tell he is a person who is innovative, someone who thinks outside the box, an intelligent and creative person. One of his photograph/art, he used a bag of Cheetos with Cheetos inside, there were also 5 figurines and one was holding up a flashlight or torch. It's valuable because it’s rare to see someone do that kind of artwork and it can even be displayed at a museum.
Some of Slinkachu's Works
Cast Away (Obonjan, Croatia, 2016)
Developing Ideas
Develop your own visual ideas in response to Slinkachu's work. Use your imagination to combine small figures with aspects of your school environment and objects in your immediate surroundings. Remember that you are creating your own work, not recreating a work by Slinkachu. Develop your own ideas in drawings and trial photographs.
Work
This is my own artwork, the compositions that are in my work is an Asian Pear and small figurines. I used blu tack to stick the miniature people on the background, The background, I used a white paper. I used a blank white paper because it brings out the colour more and also it creates shadows.

Teeth, Nutrition and Digestion - Hurumanu - Science
In Science, we have been learning about the different parts of the human body and now, we have to make a DLO about all the things we have learnt about the parts of the teeth and its purpose as well as the digestive system.
It is our choice of how we are going to present and show our learning, we can either make a diagram, slideshow presentation, mindmap, etc.
I'm really proud of the things that I have learnt in Science, I enjoyed all the classes and the experiments and animals dissections we did.
What is the "Digestive System?"
The digestive system is a set of organs in the body that work together to break down food and liquids into small portions of nutrients.
Why is the Digestive System important?
The digestive system is important because our bodies need nutrients from food and water such as proteins, fats, vitamins, etc. to function properly and stay healthy.
Facts:
- A human produces about 1.5 litres of saliva every day.
- Hiccups can be caused by a change in the temperature that happens suddenly.
- Stomach growling can happen even when you're not hungry because your stomach contracts to ensure there is no leftover food in the stomach.
- The gall bladder stores the bile used to break down dietary fat.
- The digestive system is the "second brain", this is because scientists have found that there is a strong connection between the gut and the mental health of a person and it goes beyond the "butterflies in the stomach" and the "gut feeling".

Language of Film - English - Hurumanu
In our lesson in English, we are studying about films and it highlights all the sections of it. We are trying to identify the languages of films using visual and sound techniques.
This shows my learning because, through this blog post, it shows that I have understood it on a deeper level.
Body Language:
Body Language and gestures are important in films and are necessary because it is used by the characters to express their emotions and what they are feeling, it also shows what they are thinking, because it’s an important part of communication.
Costumes:
Costumes are important because it describes what kind of personality the character has. It also tells a story, it helps the actors to transform. It makes it realistic and believable for the audience.
Hairstyles:
Just like costumes, hairstyles are important as well because it adds authenticity to the characters, it makes it believable and it also tells a story.
Make up:
Similar to the costumes and hairstyles, makeup is one of the important things in films because it is a way to improve and enhance the mood, appearance and personality of the actors.
Colour:
It is used because it sways the thought, changes the action and it causes reactions. It also setups the mood of the scenes.
Lighting:
Lighting is important in film because it determines the mood of a particular scene and it allows the scene to become more dramatic and realistic.
Props:
Props are important because it makes the story or film more alive, it draws the audience’s attention, it can help show the character’s personality.
Settings:
Settings give context to the character’s actions storyline. It helps create a moody and romantic scene. It determines where it is set and how the story will go.
Dialogue:
Dialogue is important because it creates a better understanding between the characters and also the audience, it reveals the character’s personality and their depth.

Sound effects are important because it engages the audience, it attracts their attention. It adds a mood and it can help to connect with the audience and their feelings.
Music:
Music is used in the film to capture the audience’s emotions and it can help them inspire those feelings. Music gives us clues on what the character is feeling. It also creates a perfect atmosphere along with the settings.
Silence:
Absences and silence make the scene feel more important and with that, it will capture the audience attention.
Symbols:
Symbols are important and are used in films because they create a unique language of metaphors and it is used to suggest ideas. It helps us to understand that “actions speak louder than words.”
Special FX:
Special FX are used in films and videography because it helps clean errors in scenes and it makes the scene more appealing to the audience.

Creative Manufacturing - I.D tag
The first thing we need to do is; since we have a long aluminium, we needed to cut it ourselves in order to learn how to cut and measure. We measured the aluminium flat bar with a ruler, the length has to be 45mm and the width has to be 20mm. We drew a line using a scriber (because we have to file after, we needed to put an extra length to it so we cut about 46mm) we put the aluminium in the bench vice and cut it using a hawk saw. After we finished cutting, we filed it, I used sandpaper after filing (this is totally optional) to make the aluminium smoother.
After that, we measured the aluminium using a metric gauge, there were two types of metric gauge a digital and a non-digital, in my opinion, the digital metric gauge is more accurate. After measuring, we have to fille the corners and I sandpapered it again. To make a hole, we needed and spring divider, we had to draw a line across the middle of the length, it had to be 10mm. Then we had to draw another line (8mm) of the width, it will look like a cross. Using a centre punch, we first had to put it in the middle of the cross we made and created a shallow hole with a hammer. We haven't finished the project yet, we will be finishing it next week.Hurumanu - Evaporation Experiment
Hypothesis:
I think that the copper sulfate (liquid) will turn into crystals since the copper sulfate is blue,
the crystals will be blue.
At the end of our experiment, there won't be much water left since the water had been turned into gas and the steam went through the hole of the beaker even though there's a basin on top of it.
Equipment:
- Copper Sulfate Solution
- 250mL Beaker
- Heatproof mat
- Evaporation basin
- Water
- Bunsen burner/stove (heat, element)
- Set up the bunsen burner/stove.
- Add 50mL of water to the beaker and place it on the bunsen burner/stove.
- Add copper sulfate on the evaporation basin.
- Carefully place the evaporating basin on top of the beaker which has water.
- Turn the bunsen burner/stove to 8.
- Heat the solution until most of the solvent has been evaporated and crystals of solute forming.
- Turn off the heat - careful not to touch the equipment as it will be hot for a long time.
In the end, the only a small part of the copper sulfate turned solid, there was less water, the rest evaporated.
In this experiment, we were trying to evaporate the water for it to steam and heat up the copper sulfate in order to turn it into crystals.
I think our experiment was in the middle, some of it turned to liquid but it would've been better if all the copper sulfate turned into crystals. I was really looking forward to that experiment since we've never done that kind of experiment before especially that it will turn to crystals and crystals fascinates me.

Hurumanu - Experiencing mental and emotional issues?
That's what this blog post is about, helping you, helping everyone with mental health. This is all about mental and emotional health issues and ways do deal with it.___________________________________________
Agencies the could support people with mental health issues:
Canterbury District Health Board - They improve, promote and protect the mental health and well being of the Canterbury community. They give advice and they help those who have needs.
Mental Health Education & Resource Centre - They provide health support such as psychiatrist, psychologist, psychotherapist, counsellor, etc.
Asking help is really hard, it takes a lot of courage but it's one of the most important steps to help you get better, to improve your health. Because mental health includes our emotional, psychological and social wellbeing, therefore, it affects how we think, feel and act.
These agencies I have listed are capable of improving your life because sometimes, you can't always do things by yourself, you can't always keep things by yourself. They support you and help you with your needs, they improve the relationship as well as your social life, they help you to have a good performance whether you are at school or at work, they encourage you and help you to be a better person than you're already are, they improve the quality of life, they prevent suicide and prevent one from killing someone.
Not only that it helps your mental and emotional wellbeing, but it also helps the rest of the 4 dimensions of wellbeing which is your physical wellbeing, social wellbeing and spiritual wellbeing.
_________________________________________________________________________________For the people in my school:
If someone needs help in our school, they can go to the counsellor (Mrs K), they can also ask staffs like the teachers; staffs who they trust, they can also go to the nurse if they need help with their physical wellbeing, if they're hurt, they can also go to the nurse if they need helps regarding puberty.
