Personalised Passion Project Reflection

We planned our passion project last term; we brainstormed ideas of what we could do; we decided that we would create a sculpture that is inspired by a Japanese beast, we call our creation The Beast King. Additionally, we not only made a sculpture inspired by Japanese culture, but we also made it into a sustainable sculpture using environment-friendly materials such as cardboard and newspaper. Our group and I used adhesives such as glue, duct tape and wires to put the pieces together. 

This design embellished a complex design showcasing the history, culture and mythology of Japan. Our driving question was "How can we use sustainable materials (recycle), such as newspaper and cardboard to create art--life-size sculpture?"

The figure was constructed in a way in which is easily severed. Almost puzzle-like, the head, torso, lower body including the hair is detachable for easy access. How such body parts were built systematically and with an essence of a puzzle as well. Taking influence from the Japanese culture once more in the form of construction. "Miyadaiku" is a style of carpentry in which works by making joints in the woods and putting them concurrently; it doesn't use any glue, adhesives or nails. 

To conclude, our passion project was a success because of our hard work, as well as our teamwork. It was such a fun activity because we were able to unleash our creativity and modification. We did encounter some struggles. Which appeared in us needing to adjust and negotiate. However, we worked together and got through it triumphantly

Wananga Reflection

 Last week, in Wananga class, we did our personalised passion project, we continued to put hair and add more hair in our statue. The Beast King has v-shaped hair so we had to add layers to make the hair shape like a 'V'. We also started to put hair on the head of the other Beast King since we are doing two statues.

What is Genius Hour? Genius Hour means to Create. It is a chance to unleash your creativity and be able to work on something that you are passionate about. It could be a passion that you already have or a new passion that you are interested in learning more about. One of the main outcomes of this will be for you to create something through your passion.  Given that you are working on your passion, it will be up to you to make sure you create something at the end of this.  

What else is Genius Hour? Genius Hour is a time when students are allowed to explore topics that interest them the most. The instructional focus of Genius Hour is much more about the process of exploration than the content. Students are tasked with researching their topics of interest and teachers help guide their research more thorough questions than direct learning/content delivery. Students have the freedom to access resources and people in the building who can help with the topic they’ve chosen.

For our personalised passion project, we are doing it as a group and our project will involve sustainability and creativity. We are making a beast king Kabuki (Japanese) out of sustainable materials such as newspaper, cardboard, empty tissue rolls, glues and etc. We will make it a life-size figure and there will be two of them.

Wananga Reflection

The Soul of the Rose 

John William Waterhouse

From what I can see, this painting focal point is the woman because it's dominating the whole picture, the beautiful girl is smelling the scent of the rose. On the woman's expression, we can see that she looked pleased and out-of-the-world, the reason maybe because of the alluring rose. The woman had pale skin with a touch of blush and ginger hair, tied in a bun. She's wearing ravishing blue clothing with shiny golden patterns, the clothing gives the audience an idea of the woman's attitude and actions. In my opinion, the woman's actions are as graceful as flowers in a field. The background has a very medieval-like aesthetic, we can assume that the painting was set during medieval times.  

Salo - Salo Night

Last night was the night where "Salu-Salo" was celebrated. There were varieties of performance and entertainment involved. 

The performers presented a show about the history of the Philippines and the colonization of Spain. There were also games to entertain the audience, the hosts asked a few questions about the history of the Philippines such as what does "KKK" stands for, the full name of a famous author in the Philippines, "Jose Rizal", and more. 

There was also a performance about "Tinikling", a dance where bamboos are used. The performers were amazing, it was a breath-taking sight. There was also a fashion show where traditional Filipino clothing was presented. I was actually pretty amused at how many clothings we had in the Philippines, I didn't even know half of the traditional clothing, I learnt a few things about my own culture. 

The food was exceptional, as expected, haha. Everyone was having fun and enjoying their night. 

The Eyes of Tawhirimatea

In our lesson in Wananga, we had to make a blog reflection about "The Eyes of Tawhirimatea". 

In the story behind "The Eyes of Tawhirimatea", there was nothing, there were no earth, no sea, sky or light, it was pitch black, it was cold and dark. With all the nothingness, there was the sky father, Ranginui and the earth mother, Papatuanuku, who both encountered each other and fell in love, because of their love for one another, they embraced each other and did not let go. Together, they had children and all of them were male. Their sons lived in between their darkness for years and as they grew up, they began to wonder what it would be like to live in the light. The most fierce out of all their sons, Tumatauenga, yelled at his brothers, "Let's kill them!", he was referring to their parents, Papatuanuku and Tanginui. All the brothers disagreed because they thought it was not a good idea. On the other hand, Tanemahuta had a solution to the problem, he suggested that they would separate their parents by pushing them apart. Three of their sons, Rongomatane, Tangaroa, and Haumia-Tiketike used all their strength to push their parents apart, unfortunately, they did not succeed. Their father, pleaded, "Please sons! Don't separate us!", finally, their other brothers joined them and were able to separate Papatuanuku and Tanginui apart. Overjoyed, the sons celebrated with each other to finally see light and have space to move. The other son, however, was not pleased, he couldn't stand his parents cry and see them in pain, he was full of rage that he threw his eyes up in the sky which became the "Stars of Matariki".

Well-being Assessment Reflection - Wananga

 During our Wananga, everyone in the class had to do an assessment about our well-being. We had to choose 3 personal well-being that we can work on. Personally, it was a bit hard to record the well-being I chose because I chose the physical well-being, school work well-being, and my social well-being. I finished it early and I guess you could say I did improve on those areas and I'm proud of it.

Reading Reflection

Olivia Rodrigo is an American actress, singer and songwriter. She rose to fame when she played the character named "Paige" from Bizaardvark at the age of thirteen. Since then, she started her career as a teen actress, she starred in the "American Girl Series" and other movies and shows too. She is a talented girl with an amazing voice. 

She released her first song "Drivers License" in 2021 where she became well-known. She recently released her first album that consists of various of her other songs.

Reading Reflection - Wananga

In wananga time, I began reading a comic, technically, it's called a "Manwha". A manwha is a comic or a graphic novel in South Korean style. 

It's called "The Villain's Savior" 

Summary: Set on a path to tragedy and misfortune from a young age, Aseph Randell is doomed to die a villain. That is, until the mysterious Elzay Tiathe appears in his life with a promise: "I can save you." After having vivid visions of him for so long, can Elzay untangle the twisted fate tied to Aseph... or will they both be dragged down together?

I've only read 2 chapters and I'm already hooked on the story. The beginning was very tragic and had some gruesome scene. From what I've read, the main lead - Aseph- didn't have a very good childhood. His dad was alcoholic and abusive, his mum had another lover, his mum and he was abused by his father. His parents died due to the fire set in their house, luckily, he survived. Aseph was then adopted by another possessive and abusive woman who was rich and powerful. He grew up in her household until one night, he decided he wouldn't cry anymore, he wouldn't beg for mercy, for forgiveness. So he killed his so-called mother.

 She Walks In Beauty

What is this text about?

This poem is about seeking to capture a sense of beauty in a woman. Comparing a particular woman to every beautiful thing seen in life. Featuring the physical appearance of a woman and their inner beauty. Using metaphoric sentences and adjectives which describe the appearance of the woman and her impact on the person's life. She is viewed as the "Perfect Woman" in his life, his ideal woman, the woman who has captured his heart.

How do we know this? 

Reading the poetry, you can imagine the girl described by the author. In this line "She walks in beauty, like the night, Of cloudless climes and starry skies; And all that’s best of dark and bright, Meet in her aspect and her eyes; Thus mellowed to that tender light, Which heaven to gaudy day denies." The author described her beauty as one of nature, meaning, she is a goddess.

Pages: 1-11 

In the first few pages, the story tells us about Jack and his mother going camping, travelling together, visiting exhibits. Though one morning, he woke up late, he wondered why his mum didn't wake him up and it's lunchtime, he immediately opened the zipper of his tent and hurried outside, there, he saw that the rental car was gonna. His mum suddenly disappeared without a trace. The only thing left was Jack's tent. 

Wananga: Reflection - "All that glitters is not gold"

"All that glitters is not gold", one of Shakespeare famous quote but, what does it mean? what is the message is he trying to get across? (question) 

1595 when Shakespeare used the phrase "All that glitters is not gold" in his famous play "The Merchant of Venice". What this phrase is trying to tell us is sometimes everything we see might look good on the surface but when we take a deeper look and examine it closely, it might not turn out the way we thought it' would be. I personally think that everyone is experiencing this or have already experienced it or will experience it. 

The Suicide Squad

 In the movie trailer 4, Suicide Squad directed by David Ayer, it is shown that the author constructed the characters this way to entertain and to give insight to the character transitions, it also compares the characters in the comic and in the movie. 

For instance, we can see "Deadshot" played by Will Smith, from out of the jail, locked up due to the crime he committed, to someone saving the world. We also see "Harley Quinn" played by Margot Robbie, from a crazy maniac in jail to a sexy bombshell saving the world and defeating villains. In short, the villains transitioned into heroes using their skills to accomplish victory.

The purpose of this trailer/scene was to provide a clue and insight into what the movie is going to about and also to intrigue the audience.

Water Safety Tips!!!

 This is a poster about "Water Safety Tips" that you need to know about. It is important to know about the dangers in the water to keep ourselves from warm and to be safe while having fun.

The Qualities of a Good Leader

 Last week during wananga time, all the year 9's were gathered in a room, there we talked about 'The Qualities of a Good Leader' or 'What Makes a Good Leader?'. 

The teachers shared a google slideshow presentation, each one of us had to have one slide where we brainstorm ideas of the qualities then after that we had to make screencastify, explaining those qualifications in details. 

The reason why we discussed this topic was too boost our self-esteem and confidence with our individual strengths and qualities. To help ourselves to keep learning, strive and motivated in order to grow. It also helps us build a strong relationship with our peers and a bigger group. Leadership helps attain discipline and inspiration to others.

   Let's take a look at leaders and their leadership skills and qualities. 

For instance, Jacinda Ardern, the PM (Prime Minister) of New Zealand. One of the reasons why she is a good leader because she can demonstrate empathy as a leader, which is an effective way to connect with your people and employees. Showing that she cares for her people's wellbeing give others an inspiration to think of others as well. 

Another example of a good leader is Greta Thunberg, a Swedish environmental activist who delivered an inspiring speech regarding climate change. From watching her speech, she gave out the word "leader" because she was honest and confident in her opinion. She used her voice to influence others, to give an idea of what humanity has done to the environment such as human-made pollution. 

Lastly, Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu known as "Mother Teresa", a saint, is a good inspiration to everyone, especially among young people because she is compassionate and resilient. Others entitled her as a "hero" because of her willingness to risk her own health to care for others. She has helped millions of people worldwide, she did everything to improve the lives of others, she deserves the title of "hero" because not only she improved the people's lives but also her act of selflessness and dedication towards the poor.

 We have started working with our business plan for Business Enterprise. I have finished making our advertisement to show our people our product on market day. 

This is the advertisement I have made. 

I really liked how it turned out because it's very aesthetic just the way I like it. It attracts the people's eye, and this I think, if people are able to see the product advertisement, they'd wanna purchase it.
