  • The side winning a rally, adds a point to its score.
  • At 20 all, the side which gains a 2 point lead first, wins the game.
  • At 29 all, the side scoring the 30th point wins that game.
  • The side winning a game serves first in the next game.
Singles
  • At the beginning of the game, when the server’s score is eventhe server serves from the right service court. When the server’s score is odd, the server serves from the left service court.
  • If the server wins a rally, the server scores a point and then serves again from the alternate service court.
  • If the receiver wins a rally, the receiver scores a point and becomes the new server. They serve from the appropriate service court – left if their score is odd, and right if it is even.

The Plague Doctor - Creative Writing

This is my creative writing, it was the last task I had to do about the Black Death in Social Studies. I have included old English so that when reading, you can feel like you're in medieval times and some descriptive words.
Hus = House
Shall = Must or Will
Flagon = A large container which drink is served
Jovial = Cheerful, Happy, Joyful
Dejected = Sad and Depressed
Wifman = Woman
x

I looked up at the sky, the clouds were no longer white or pale grey, instead they were blackened shadows that shifted along the wind. The scene before me was chilling, where I stand used to be a jovial town, now, it is filled with dejected souls. Like it’s been cursed by the wicked.
I stopped in front of a patient hus’ door, I tapped the door using my cane, the door creaked open. “Ah doctor, this way please” I scanned her, she was filthy, she had blood on her dress, she wasn’t wearing any footwear, she had a dirty face, poor peasant.
She led me to the room of the victim, he looked horrible, “This is my son” the lady spoke, “Pleased to meet you” I said, before the victim could speak a word, he coughed, he whimpered, I  heard the lady sobbed. “I will try to do everything I can to cure him” I assured the lady to make her feel a little bit better.
I slowly lifted his arms using my cane, the buboes were as big as an egg, I took out my scalpel, “This will hurt” I told the victim “It does not matter, as long as I can be cured, I will endure everything” I slowly cut the buboes, black blood leaked, the victim hissed in pain.
I rubbed onion on his armpits, “You shall need to drink this” I took out a flagon that had treacle in it, poured him on a cup that was on the table. He took it and gulped until the last drop of the liquid. “You will need to take a lot of rest”.

“I will need to examine you lest you have been infected” I told the wifman. After I had done an examination, I told her to rest. A couple of hours have passed, I have burned logs, they both came to me looking a little healthier “Sit close to the fire, it will cure your fever” I said. “We feel a lot better, thanks to you” The wifman smiled genuinely while sitting on the chair with her son “It is my job, I must take my leave” I said “Thank you again, God bless you”. “Make sure to drink the treacle I left on your table and to take a lot of rest” “Yes we will” I took my leave and went to the next victim’s hus. And that’s what I do everyday as the plague doctor.

The Plague Doctor - Hurumanu - Social Studies

For Social Studies, I studied about the Plague Doctor that cures the plague back in the medieval days.
Once I finished it, the task I had to do is to draw the plague doctor, its attire/gear and equipment.
This is my drawing

White Hat - Back in the medieval times, such a hat identified someone as a doctor

Scalpel - For opening the "buboes"

Leather Gloves - Protecting hands from the bacteria when touching the patient

Garlic - For prevention, the doctor chewed garlic constantly

Cloak - Body protection from fleas

Primitive Mask - Protection from the spoiled air, it's filled with fragrant medicinal herbs to protect from the stench which could also carry the plague. An eye mask of red glasses to make the doctor immune to the disease. It is shaped like a bird because people believed it would repel the plague from a sick person.

The Pomander - On the neck is a casket for aromatic herbs and substances which scare off the plague

Fishermen's Wandering - Dressed under a raincoat to protect the legs and the groin from infection

Cane - For examining the patients without needing to touch them

Causes and Cures of the Black Death - Hurumanu - Social Studies

I have finished a task on my Social Studies Hurumanu, and yes, it's regarding the Black Death. In this topic, I have learnt about the causes that people in the medieval thought that caused the Black Death.
I had to make a mindmap, in that mindmap, we have to put down the causes of the pandemic.

This is the mindmap that I've created using Google Drawing.

This is where I got the ideas from

I've also studied the cures of the Black Death, I was actually curious of their cures back in the medieval times since we now use different medicines (modern) compared back then.

This is the presentation I made using piktochart

Here's the link, it will take you to the site which had my presentation if you can't read the words properly: https://create.piktochart.com/output/45881453-cures-of-the-black-death

Black Death Symptoms - Hurumanu - Social Studies

Today, I've studied, researched and learnt about the symptoms of black death. I've also made a presentation regarding the symptoms of the plague.
I copied the details from this poster that our teacher in social studies put in the tasks.
I made mine using "Piktochart"

This is the one I made

If you aren't able to read it because the letters are small, here's the link to the preview

How Rats and Fleas Spread the Black Death

Today, I've learnt how the black death was easily passed on from one human to another. It's not also because of their poor hygiene back in medieval times. It's also because of rats and fleas.

It's important that we have the knowledge to still look back to what happened in the past so we are alert of what we should do at times like these.

This is the table that holds information about rats and fleas

Rats in General
Black Rats
Brown Rats
Fleas
  • Are heavy breeders
  • Two most common types are the black rat and brown rat
  • Can feed on almost everything edible
  • Tend to stay near people
  • Weighs up to 450 grams
  • Fleas are very infectious

  • Are also called roof and climbing rats
  • Weigh about 200 grams
  • Rodent, Rattus

  • Poison, gas, traps are ways of killing them
  • Also called sewer or wharf rats
  • Dig and burrow and are good swimmers
  • Commonly found in cities, especially in seaports, in upper storeys of houses and buildings
  • Can go without food for several months if necessary

  • Lay eggs in the hair of animals, in dirt and rubbish
  • Jump as much as 200 times their body length
  • Feed on the blood of a host
  • Will often move from one host to another
  • Fleas are less infectious
  • Do not rely so much on people

  • I have made a diagram which visualises the cycle of the disease

Explanation - The plague which is the black death was easily spread due to the bacteria that the rat has in their blood. Fleas find a rat to be its host so when it bites the rat, it then infects the blood of a rat. When a flea bites a human, it passes the bacteria that caused the disease.
The bacteria target the lungs of the human and the human will cough out blood, if the infected human coughs on you, it passes on to you and you'll be likely dying by the end of the week.

How the Black Death went from Asia to Europe - Social Studies - Hurumanu

Today, I've finished work in social studies about the Black Death, and yes, we're still working at home.  For this activity, we have to make a cartoon stip regarding how the disease spread from Asia to Europe.

I've learnt that the reason why Black Death was very easy to spread since, in the medieval, the people's hygiene was very poor. Did you know that when you're poor in medieval times, you're very lucky if you get to bath 4 times per year! Yes, that's how poor their hygiene was, bathing and washing were very uncommon back then. No wonder why they get sick easily. Lesson learned we should take good care of ourselves so we don't get sick easily and to have a good, clean, and healthy body.

This was the cartoon stip we have to copy

    This is mine

    Sequence of Events
    1. Traders in the Crimea have been besieged for three years by Tartar hordes from Central Asia.
    2. The Black Death breaks out among the Tartars.
    3. The Tartars used their sieged machines to fling their dead inside the walls of the fort.
    4. The disease spreads to the people inside the fort.
    5. The Tartars flee.
    6. The survivors inside the fort set sail for Europe bringing the disease with them.

Talking about having poor hygiene in the medieval times, this is one of the 11 facts about medieval hygiene that I made using Canva

We are very lucky that we have what we have now, necessities, having toilets, tissue, shower, etc.

Check out for more facts you didn't know

    What is a rambutan??

Today, we're going to talk about one of my most favourite exotic fruit.
Rambutan is a word that means "hairy" in Indonesian, scientifically named "Nephelium lappaceum".

It is native in Southeast Asia but has been spread throughout, Asia, Africa, Oceania, and Central America. You'll know when the rambutan is ripe when it's red and the hairy part is orange or yellow. It's very sweet.
The right way to eat this is you have to peel is first in order to get the rich and delicious fruit.
I've seen some people peel it with a peeler, it kinda hurts to see them to that since I know the right way to peel it.
You can peel it with your hands, you can start out by using a knife and cutting through the skin but don't cut it thoroughly, you just want where there's a hole you can grab the skin and peel.

    10 amazing facts about rambutans

    • Thailand is the largest producer of rambutan followed by Malaysia and Indonesia
    • Rambutans comes in a spherical shape
    • In Vietnam, rambutans are called "chom chom" meaning "messy hair", due to the spines that's covering the fruit's skin
    •  Rambutan flowers are a rich source of nectar which attracts beesants and flies, and is responsible for the pollination of the plant
    • The oil that is extracted from the seed can be used as cooking oil, it can also be used for candles, soaps and scents
    • The Dutch introduced rambutan in Southeast Asia in the 19th century
    • Rambutans are related to the fruit lychee and longans
    • It's rich in vitamin C, copper, water, fibre and other smaller amount of nutrients
    • It can reduce cancer risk, help fight infections, may protect against heart disease and diabetes
    • It promotes healthy digestion due its fibre content
