Once I finished it, the task I had to do is to draw the plague doctor, its attire/gear and equipment.
This is my drawing
White Hat - Back in the medieval times, such a hat identified someone as a doctor
Scalpel - For opening the "buboes"
Leather Gloves - Protecting hands from the bacteria when touching the patient
Garlic - For prevention, the doctor chewed garlic constantly
Cloak - Body protection from fleas
Primitive Mask - Protection from the spoiled air, it's filled with fragrant medicinal herbs to protect from the stench which could also carry the plague. An eye mask of red glasses to make the doctor immune to the disease. It is shaped like a bird because people believed it would repel the plague from a sick person.
The Pomander - On the neck is a casket for aromatic herbs and substances which scare off the plague
Fishermen's Wandering - Dressed under a raincoat to protect the legs and the groin from infection
Cane - For examining the patients without needing to touch them

Hi Skyler,
ReplyDeleteWhat a great drawing and description! I think it would be terrifying if a doctor turned up in that mask! Did any of these innovations work? Did the doctors still get sick?
