AT WHAT RATES DO DIFFERENT ITEMS DECOMPOSE?
MY INVESTIGATION.
Choose 5 items from the list and investigate them.
You need to answer three questions.
Name: Leaves, Orange Peels, Plastic Bags, Styrofoam, Aluminium Cans
You need to answer three questions.
Name: Leaves, Orange Peels, Plastic Bags, Styrofoam, Aluminium Cans
- How long do they take to decompose?
- Leaves = 1-3 months
- Orange Peel = 3-6 months
- Plastic Bags = 10-20 years
- Styrofoam = Never
- Aluminium Cans = 200-400 years
- What resource/fossil fuel are they made from?
- Leaves = Trees, when it's autumn, leaves fall from trees
- Fruit Peels = Fruit, when eating fruits, you remove their peels, some fruits peels are edible, some aren't
- Plastic Bags = Ethylene (Derived from natural gas and petroleum)
- Styrofoam = Expanded polystyrene foams
- Aluminium Cans = Tin-plated steel
- How is this resource recycled?
- Leaves = You can shred (optional) them and make it into mulch, leaf molds, DIY (do it yourself) compost. If you have a chicken you can use it as a bedding.
- Fruit Peels = For orange peels, before eating, cut the orange peel in half and remove the endocarp and all the juices until it's left with its albedo, melt some wax and put the wick in the middle, you now have an orange-scented DIY candle. You can make decorations, make perfume, and/or cosmetics products.
- Plastic Bags = Reuse it for future purposes, make a DIY plastic clothing. Use it to line bins at home. You can use it to wrap any delicate valuable things at home.
- Styrofoam = You shred it and make it into a cushion fill like bean bags. Use it for DIY's
- Aluminium Cans = You can use it for DIY's and for life hacks. Exchange it for money, some communities allows it.
- How does this object contribute to climate change?
- Leaves = It causes landfills, sea animals eats the leaves that are dragged or blown from the wind thinking it's food.
- Fruit Peels = It causes landfills
- Plastic Bags = By making a lot of plastic bags, it causes pollution, thinning our ozone layers and it also causes landfills. When it floods and there plastic bag flying around everywhere, it blocks the water from going through the drain.
- Styrofoam = It causes pollution in the process of making them, it blocks the drains
- Aluminium Cans = It increases the trash
