Sustained Silent Reading - Hurumanu - Power to the People

Sit, Stay, Love

Author: J.J Howard

Non-Fiction, Romance

The main topic of the book is a girl wanting a dog and meeting a boy

Main Character:
Cecilia

Vocabularies I've learnt:
Chasmophile - Lover of small spaces, nooks and crannies

Facts I've learnt:
People vs Dogs
- People complain, puppies never do
- People can be sneaky mean. If a dog id mad he'll just bark or maybe even bite. But there's no sneak
- People: not furry. Also, it's weird if they lick your hand
- They love you no matter what

For the subject topic "Power to the People" we had to bring a book if you don't have a book/didn't bring one, you can just read on articles on the paper that you chose from what the teacher gave you. I brought the book I already had, it's one of my favourite books and it's been so long since I last read it. I think the last time I read it was around 2 years ago. It gave me a nostalgic feeling.

Page 1-11

It started with a list of "People vs Puppies" It's mostly biased and is on about the dog's side. In the first few pages, a problem occurred, their house was one fire and she and her dad had to live with her aunt while the firefighters were fixing their house. It mostly describes the main character's personality; a loner, dog lover (she's been asking for a puppy since birth).

Page 11-16

So the next chapter talked about a new dog that was rescued and brought to the shelter. How Cecilia and Potato (the names Cecilia gave the pug) bonded together; Cecilia taking care of the pug and talking to Potato about her life and looking after the shelter called Orphan Paws.

Page 16-24

Cecilia and Potato continued to bond. But the next few pages, it focused more on her Aunt Pamela, her dad's older sister. There was also a list of "Reasons why Cecilia Murray should be allowed to have a dog". Aunt Pamela's personality is also described in the pages I have read, it wasn't actually described, I kind of somewhat figured out her personality based on how she treats and talks to Cecilia.

Page 24-28

After reading those 4 pages, I met another character in the book named "Eric Chung" who is - to Cecilia's knowledge - the most popular guy in eighth grade. It was written down what Cecilia thought about Eric, it also describes Eric. In the last two pages between page 24 to 28, it was shown in the book how one of her teachers, Mrs Wilson, treated her, kind of different than Eric.

Page 28-32

I got to know more about Cecilia and how much of an anti-social she was because it's been so long since she has talked to a someone since her best friend, Mel, left. She's been only talking to dogs and her relatives and the boss of the orphanage she works at.

Page 32-37

The author introduced Mel to the story, who is Cecilia's bestfriend that moved cities and is the opposite of her. It told about her personality, how she is treated in her new school and her relationship with Mel like what kind of friendship they have. It also explained about this Allie girl - popular girl - who is rumoured that she went out with Eric Chung.

Page 37- 44

The one and only, Eric Chung went to Orphan Paws to adopt a purebred dog, along with his mum. Cecilia was rude to him because she found him annoying. They adopt purebred dogs because they take dogs on talent shows and they only allow purebred dogs. Potato - the dog Cecilia fell in love with, was safe from Eric Chung, he was the only purebred dog at the moment at the Orphan Paws, therefore, there could've been a large chance of possibility that he would get adopted by the Chung Family. But thank goodness they didn't tell them about Potato.

44-51

She met Eric Chung's sister, Lily Chung. She wasn't as snobby as Cecilia thought she was. They did kickball and Cecilia was in the backfield along with Lily Chung, the both of them weren't a fan of kickball or any particular sports, that's what they have in common. That's how they met and had a chat.

To be continued...

How to write an email?

During the lockdown, since students like me were working from home. Most of us wrote emails to our teacher. Our teacher noticed that some of us don't know how to write an email properly, in a formal way. So, she taught us how to write an email, by practising on writing an email to her and to our parents.

This is my email to her, as you can see I have put in a greeting "Dear Mrs Allan-Fletcher"

I have written a check-in, a check-in is asking someone how they have been doing, how they are, etc.

The body is why you are writing an email; what it is about.

You can also put a link, it's definitely up to you and what your email is about.

I wrote a closing, it can be anything, "Yours Sincerely" , "Kind Regard" and many more.

Make sure you write your signature like what I did, I put my first name and surname.

WordArt - Lockdown

Today in Wananga before period 3, we had to make a WordArt, about what we did during lockdown. The purpose of making this is a remembrance, when we grow up, we'll remember the things we did during lockdown because of Covid19.
The words we have to put needed to be at least 10 words, we can put down more.
I think mine turned well, I like everything about this photo. The words were clearer and it popped out because of the black background since the words are colourful.

What is "Safety?"
Safety is protecting yourself from harm and danger.

How to keep yourself safe:

  • Put your bag under the desk
  • Do not run in the laboratory
  • Do not play with the equipment
  • When doing an experiment, tie your hair up
  • Do not eat or drink in the laboratory
  • Wear the proper gear

What is "Hazardous?"
Hazardous is when an object or someone can potentially harm you or dangerous to you.

What is "Meniscus?"
The curved side of a liquid when it is in an object that can hold or carry liquid.

Hello and Goodbye Writing

Today, during in our Wananga time, we were told to make a "Hello and Goodbye" writing but it has to be about what we did during the lockdown. It's saying goodbye to what happened during the lockdown in the past and what is happening at the moment.
This is mine, I wrote it down on a Google Doc first and then transferring it to Google Draw.

Welcome to PE at Level 2 - Hurumanu - PE

Some things I liked during lockdown was that I had a lot of time to work on myself and learn more about myself. I've learnt how to make a lot of dishes, I spent more time with my family at home, I've had new hobbies, I got to try out the "Things to do at home list". Using the internet, I still got to communicate with my friends despite the lockdown and being at home. I also had more time to chill at home and watch a lot of movies, dramas, animes, etc. I've learnt the importance of keeping yourself safe from the virus or any other things that can cause you harm outside.

The things I dislike, there were times where I was fine with being at home all day, but of course, I'm like everyone else, I like going outside, going to school, hanging out with my friends, just basically enjoying outdoors.

What I've been doing regarding fitness, I've done some exercises such as stretching, jumping, squats. I've also balanced a diet, I ate healthier meals, eating more vegetables and fruits. I avoided junk foods like chips, chocolates, coke, etc.

~~~
For the starter, I would like to do jump rope because it can increase your muscle tone, burns calories. I would like to play badminton for the activity because badminton is one of my favourite sports, it doesn't need a lot of people to play,
it passes the "10 people bubble".
For the warm down game, I'd like to do octopus because I know people would want to play it as well as I do, it also doesn't need a lot of people to play it. And people in my class are familiar with that game, they know how to play it since we always play it as the warm-up in P.E.
ESOL - Adjectives
For our week 4 work in ESOL, our teacher set work for us to do, we have to make a poster about the adjective. A description of it, the examples of adjectives, how to use them in a sentence, include photos.
We can present it in any presentation platforms. I used piktochart.
Hurumanu - Positive Thoughts and Self-talk
For health, I finished my presentation about the "Positive Thoughts and Self-talk" topic. I've explained the definition of both of them and the importance of having these. I have also written down the benefits of having them. I used "Canva" for my presentation, I researched online as well.
This is the link to my presentation: https://www.canva.com/design/DAD7WJI3lTI/Hdbi488SlzStit8nDTd16w/view?utm_content=DAD7WJI3lTI&utm_campaign=designshare&utm_medium=link&utm_source=sharebutton
Business Studies - DIY Games
The task we had to do in Business Studies was to create a board game, card game, and etc. that incorporates what we have learned over term 1.
I have made a card game where you match the picture with its name/label and its definition.
I chose this type of game because I think that it's very easy to make and play. It evolves around words that are very important when it comes to the topic "Money, Business and Finance".
It reflects on my learning because these cards are what we have already learned and studied in business studies.
Creative Manufacturing - Twist Drill Bits
In CMM, you have to research about the drill bits, in a google doc or google slide, you have to put in all the information you've found and the features of a twist drill bits.
I've made mine in a google slide, I've put down information, features, photos with labels on my presentation.
