An Environmental Crisis: Ocean Pollution Essay - Hurumanu - Sustainability

Pollution is an environmental crisis our world has been enduring for decades, within this topic, our discussion will be about ‘Ocean Pollution’. This essay is illustrated with examples of the causes and the numerous pollution incidents. 

Looking at where it all began, one of the biggest causes of ocean pollution comes from “non-point source pollution”. For instance, motor vehicle engines like trucks, cars, boats, including larger sources such as farms and ranches. They drop small amounts of oil each day onto roads and much of these oils make their way to the sea. Similarly, when oil flows in sewers, rivers and drainage, it goes directly in the ocean. As well as minerals and substances, they often make their way into the ocean. The release of these chemicals in the ocean’s ecosystem could lead to a reduction in the oxygen levels, decay of plant life and a decline of water quality. 

In the extension of the topic ‘Oil Spillage’, some of these oils come from sea vessels. Let’s use ships as an example, when ships travel, a preponderance of oils leak out and go to the ocean. Speaking of ships, let’s look at this text even further. In 1988, in the North Sea, the oil platform of ‘Piper Alpha’ below the sea was destroyed by an outbreak of fire on its surface, killing 167 workers (1.8 million litres of oil spillage). Another crisis, in June 1990, an outburst on board of a Norweigian supertanker called ‘The Mega Borg’, spilling an estimation of 23 million litres of crude oil in the Gulf of Mexico. 

These accidental and on purpose oil spills are responsible for killing and injuring large sea creatures. Whales, seals as well as seabirds and fish, small seashore animals such as barnacles and snails. Planktons and tiny plants which live on and below the sea surface.

Another problem is dumping food waste and toxic liquids in the ocean, they raise the ocean’s temperature, as a result of glacier integration and raising the ocean levels. When the ocean’s temperature rises, it will cause coral bleaching and the loss of breeding grounds for marine fishes and mammals, hence a reduction in marine life. 

Pollution is affecting marine life and overall the world. Without the ocean, people and most animals would die from dehydration. The ocean absorbs 50 times more carbon dioxide than our atmosphere, it covers 70% of the Earth surface. This means that the air we breathe, the majority comes from the absorption of our ocean. 

Consequently, toxic chemicals from industries plus productions, such as waste and agricultural pollution are the two most common waste. Some of these water pollutants could also cause air pollution as well as land. In other words, our Earth relies on the ocean as much as the ocean relies on land. It's our duty to protect our resources if we still want to have them. It’s up to our hospitality and determination to protect the waters.

Music used in Coraline - Hurumanu - English: Film Study

What are we learning? We are learning about the use of music in the movie Coraline. Recognizing the complementary of that music with the scene and colours. 

In the movie Coraline, music is used effectively to illustrate the mood and atmosphere. For example, in the house exploration scene of Coraline, slow tempo and minor chords were used producing a quiet dynamic. This music made the viewers feel intrigued. This was done to make the audience feel the emotions of Coraline, which was ‘bored’. This worked well with the pale and dark monochromatic colours making the scene gloomy and dull. This aspect can be compared to when Coraline was in the 'other world' where it was happy, warm and perfect. 

In the scene of the 'Mouse Circus' in the movie 'Coraline, music is used effectively to illustrate the mood and atmosphere. For instance, in that scene, fast tempo and the major chord is used, making a loud dynamic. The director did this on purpose to match the scene with the music and to show an entertaining scene as well to the audience. This worked well with colourful and vibrant colours which suit the scene and music. This can be juxtaposed with the 'other father' giving Coraline a tour in their marvellous garden.

In this filmography 'Coraline, music is used efficiently to formulate a particular scene. Using the scene of the 'other father's' song for Coraline used a fast tempo and a major chord as a result of a loud dynamic. Making the audience perceive an optimistic and cheerful scene. The director did this on purpose to manipulate the audience into thinking that the character's in the other world has good intentions. This worked well with picturesque and lively colours. This aspect can be compared to the scene where Coraline met the other people in the pink mansion. 

How does this show my learning? 

This shows that I have understood the use of music and recognise the meaning of the tempos, chords and dynamic.

What am I wondering as a result of this learning? I am wondering how the other activity or task connects with the overall story. 

Gymnastics - Hurumanu - Physical Education

We have been learning about gymnastics for the past few days and today, in our lesson in p.e, we did gymnastics, we learnt different techniques and skills. I had a lot of fun and not only that I had fun, I learn something as well. In gymnastics, there were different activities we can do such as the trampoline, beam, hula hoop and so on. 

I personally liked the beam more than the others, it's actually my favourite because I like the way how I can do poses and different techniques on the beam. 

The Heart Dissection - Science - Hurumanu

What have we been learning about? We have been learning about the heart and the circulatory system for the past few days. The parts of the heart and their purposes and the circulatory system; their labels and functions. 

Why are we dissecting heart? We are dissecting the heart to find and label the parts of the heart and be able to explain their functions and purposes. 

 What are the parts of the heart?

• Atrium - The atrium is the upper chamber of the heart that receives blood.
• Ventricle - The ventricle is responsible for pumping the blood away from the heart.
• Valves - The purpose of the valves is to move the blood around the body.
• Pulmonary Artery - The right ventricle artery which pumps oxygen to the lungs. 

There were two parts of the heart that we didn't see because it has been cut off. Those parts were the atrium and the veins. 

Why do we need oxygen? We need oxygen because it produces energy which we need for our body to function. 

Enjoy?  I really enjoyed the experiment because I got to find out and see for myself the parts of the circulatory systems and as well as what the insides of the heart look like. It's very educational and knowledgable, you learn a lot of things with dissection of the heart.

This is a 'pig's heart' that has been cut open. We were taught which side (right or left) was bigger. 

The left ventricle was the biggest side of the heart which means the side is where we are going to cut first. We cut it side ways with a sharp dissecting knife. 

As you can see from this image, you can clearly tell that the bigger part of the heart means it's the left ventricle. It had more heart strings. we also saw the artery but it has been removed before so we only got to see the hole. 

Open Steak Sandwich & Rice Spring Rolls - Home Economics

Open Steak Sandwich 

Ingredients: 

• Flat Steak 
• Lettuce 
• Tomatoes
• Cheddar Cheese
• Buns

How is it made? 

1. Season the steak with minced garlic, oil, salt and pepper and marinate it.

2. Heat the pan, after the pan is heated, put in the marinated flat steak. Cook it for 2 minutes, make sure to not overcook it or it will be rubbery. 

3. Cut the tomatoes into circles. Cut the lettuce into strips. 

4. Prepare your buns, add the lettuce, tomatoes and cheddar cheese, you can put any sauce you'd like.

Appearance

The steak was juicy and the texture was right. 

The bun was soft and fluffy. 

The lettuce gave the sandwich a crunch and it made it healthier. 

The tomatoes made the sandwich juicier and gave it a sweet and sour taste to it.

Rating: I would give this dish a 9 out of 10, not a 10 because there could be more ingredients added to it like spinach and capsicum. 

Rice Paper Spring Rolls

• Thin Rice Noodles
• Cucumber
• Lettuce
• Rice Paper
• Carrot
• Bean sprouts

How is it made? 

1. Cut the cucumber, carrot into julienne. Cut the lettuce into thin strips. Cut the bean sprout into small pieces (the bean sprout we used were big and were not enough to distribute it to everyone in the group. 

2. Soak the rice paper in warm water, take the rice paper when it has become soft and is able to shape it. 

3. Place the rice paper on a plate or a workspace, put the vegetables you like on top of the rice paper, fold one of the two equivalent sides of the rice paper (the rice paper shape was circle). Then start rolling it on the end of the sides of the rice paper that is not folded.

Appearance 

It looks nice and presentable on the outside. 

It doesn't have any meat or any other seasoning to make it flavourful, just looking at the rice paper spring rolls, it looked bland. 

It looks wet.

Rating: I would rate it a 1 out of 10 because I just didn't like it, the texture and flavour.

Hello ladies and gentlemen, today, I will briefly explain everything about budgeting. Yes, that's right, this is about budgeting, unlike my previous blogpost about budgeting, that was about the key points. This is the 'guide', which tells you more about other information. 

This budgeting guide will give you knowledge and guide to budgeting, it consists of a definition of the three main types of budgeting. Not only that, but it also has information about the elements in budgeting, such as variable expenses, discretionary expenses, and fixed expenses and their definitions and examples. 

This blogpost will help you understand and enlighten you about budgeting, especially if you won't know how to or if you want to improve your budgeting skills and knowledge.  

I've always and still am having a hard time budgeting, I would ask myself, "Should I buy this? Will this be worth it?. Those kinds of questions, of course, even though I don't have a job and I rely on my parents and don't have to do work at the moment. I still need to be cautious about the things I spent the money my parents provided me with on. Learning about budgeting in 'Business Studies' has helped me improve my budgeting. And I'm pleased with my work because it shows all the things I have learnt about budgeting and I can explain and give an outlook of my learning and experiences to everyone.

Lighting and Colour used in the film 'Coraline' - Film Study - Hurumanu - English

What are we learning? In film study, we learnt about the 'Lighting and Colour' that were used in Coraline. We had to write one paragraph in one of the scenes in Coraline, explaining the lighting and colour that were used in that scene. The purpose of those colours; why the director did that on purpose and the effects and impacts on the viewer. 

How does this work show my learning? This shows my learning because I have understood the director's purpose when using the colours and try to match with the scene.

What am I wondering as a result of this learning? I wonder how the next topic about Coraline constrast the others.

This is the scene where Coraline met the ‘other mother’ for the first time. In this scene, the other mother is holding a pastel green bowl, there are a bunch of yellow flowers on a pot. The colour that was used in this scene is pastel and vibrant orange. As you can see, they used the colours in the background; the cupboard, walls, oven and window rails. When using these colours, you feel warm and fuzzy, it manipulates us into thinking that the intentions are good and innocent.

They used the middle long shot, I can tell it was a middle long shot because the object is showing relation to the background/surroundings. It gives a connection to the audience with what is happening in the scene. The director used this location to show the audience the homey and cosy place in a house, which is the kitchen including the dining area. Where all the family members come together to eat and discuss. 

As the film goes on to where the ‘other mother’ shows her true colours, Coraline finally realised that she, Beldam, was a monster. She found out that every nice thing that the other mother has done for her was all the trap. It was her plan to trap Coraline inside the ‘dark world’, in the dark world, everyone had black button eyes, which is very creepy and odd. In this scene, the neon purple worked well with the navy blue colours on the ceiling and dark red on the cabinets. There were also green, white and orange highlights on both Coraline and the other mother which made the scene even more intense and gave the viewers a scare. 

This is the scene where the other mother has fully transformed into a hideous monster. They used green shades on this scene, especially on the other mother’s characters. It is petrifying because of the colours they used, it’s amazing how they were able to match the colours in scenes like these. It gave the audience wonder, if the protagonist, Coraline, will surrender and give up her eyes and soul or finds a way to escape. 

I would like feedback on my work so that I'll know what my next steps are.
